Health officials confirmed on Tuesday the first case of the Ika virus in Guatemala , a disease transmitted by the mosquito "Aedes aegypti" which can also spread dengue and chikungunya. At a press conference led by the Minister of Public Health and Social Assistance, Mariano Rayo, the authorities explained that the case was confirmed in a man in the eastern department of Zacapa.

Following this case, the authorities declared an epidemiological alert throughout the Guatemalan territory.

The type of emergency will be the same as stated in the case of dengue and chikungunya, in order to monitor possible cases of fever produced by the zika. Technical Deputy Health Minister Germ?n Acevedo and Epidemiology in the Department, Loren Gobern, detailed that the case was confirmed by a laboratory test that was sent to the United States. Gobern said the sample was taken last November 12 the patient presented fever, headache and body, nausea and conjunctivitis without secretion. "The sample was confirmed positive on Tuesday in writing," he said.


She added that it is evaluating other people who had contact with the man who has tested positive for Zika.

Zika virus infection ? Guatemala Disease Outbreak News

PAHO/WHO has received notification of a laboratory-confirmed autochthonous case of Zika virus infection in Guatemala. The case, who is a resident of the Zacapa department, developed symptoms on 11 November. An investigation is being carried out to detect further cases. The confirmatory testing was performed at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Fort Collins. Guatemalan health authorities are implementing the corresponding prevention and control activities.
[h=3]WHO advice[/h] Given the increased transmission of Zika virus in the Region of the Americas, PAHO/WHO recommends that its Member States establish and maintain the capacity to detect and confirm cases of Zika virus infection, prepare their health services for a potential additional burden at all levels of health care, and implement an effective public communications strategy to reduce the mosquitoes that transmit this disease, particularly in areas where this vector is present. Authorities suspect other possible cases of Zika virus

Zacapa Regional Hospital said Wednesday that there are 17 suspected cases of the Zika virus in that department, so expect lab results to determine if it is that disease.


Juan Tomas Garcia, director of the hospital, said the 17 suspects, 14 cases are recorded in the said hospital employees.

Guatemala: Ministry of Health recorded 29 zika cases in the country

The Health Ministry confirmed Wednesday zika 29 cases in the country, of which 22 are reported in Zacapa and seven in Escuintla.

They also have recorded five suspected cases, which are located in Baja Verapaz, Suchitepequez and Coatepeque, Quetzaltenango.

In Guatemala 200 suspected cases of suffering the spread of Zika virus from November 2015, and 68 cases confirmed in laboratory tests during the same year, the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOH) were detected.

The infections have occurred in the country, locally in 12 of the 22 departments.Zacapa is where were detected most cases, 32 have been confirmed.

Recent reports of health organizations in South America, there is the possibility that the virus is transmitted from mother to child bearing incidence in cases of microcephaly, a situation that is still in the process of scientific study.

In Guatemala there is only one case of suspected mother would have carried the virus during the first weeks of pregnancy. According to the MOH, the state of pregnancy of the person being monitored. So far no data on whether the baby has been affected.
