Guadalupe Island confirms its first death from coronavirus
EFE - 03/21/2020, 06:56 PM

San Juan, Mar 21 (EFE) .- The Government of Guadalupe confirmed this Saturday the death of a 71-year-old woman, the first fatality by COVID-19 on the Caribbean island, while the number of positive cases reached 51 .

The circumstances of the woman's death are under investigation by the Guadalupe health authorities.

For its part, the Regional Health Agency (ARS, in French) reported this Saturday that the number of positive cases in the overseas territory increased from 45 last Thursday to 51.

Of these, 11 are hospitalized and four are in critical condition, indicated the ARS.

The ARS, for its part, recommended that the inhabitants of Guadalupe - as requested by health experts around the world - take shelter in their homes to stop the infections.

This territory of just over 1,600 square kilometers located in the southeast of the Dominican Republic with a population of around 390,000 inhabitants, is one of the Caribbean islands where cases of COVID-19 have grown the most in recent days.

Meanwhile, in Martinique, also French overseas territory, the number of those infected by COVID-19 increased from 23 last Thursday to 35 this Saturday.

The first death from the virus has already been reported in this Caribbean territory.

According to radio reports, the woman had physical contact with a family member who had traveled on a cruise ship in previous days, so she possibly caught the virus on the boat.

When presenting the symptoms of COVID-19, the woman was hospitalized and her family members were instructed to isolate themselves in their residences so as not to spread more people.

The French overseas territories of the Caribbean have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, since the situation in Guadalupe and Martinique must be added to that of San Bartolom?, where the three confirmed cases of contagion have made the local authorities ask the population that extreme security measures are taken. In detail, this assessment shows that, among these confirmed cases,
- 16 patients are hospitalized in the CHU: 10 in the service of infectious and tropical diseases (2 of which have a very favorable evolution towards healing) and 6 patients in intensive care.

In fact and more than ever, the ARS recalls that the containment measures recommended for the whole population and particularly for contact cases are essential to limit the progression of the number of cases.

This awareness must not be relaxed, it must, on the contrary, be reinforced. The next ten days will be decisive in the extent of the spread of the epidemic.

17 cases cured
A press release which brings perhaps the first good news, since the beginning of the epidemic with us. 17 people are declared cured by infectiologists in Guadeloupe.
"The cure was defined by the High Council of Public Health, last March 16. The declaration of the cure is a medical decision. It is the responsibility of the competent services which assure the screening and the follow-up of the sick subjects. "after the complete disappearance of symptoms for at least 2 days after the illness for people with little symptom and up to 14 days after discharge from hospital that people can be declared cured" specifies the ARS.
