Thanks for the graphs gsgs, very telling.

Thank you gsgs. Are you able to post the relevant figures along with your graph?

I updated the picture, tell me how you want it.
The server is slow with updates, maybe I can upload
updates to another page ?

Re: HUMAN AI CASES in BREAKING FORUM - LINK

Re: HUMAN AI CASES in BREAKING FORUM - LINK

The high school math tutor in me can't leave this alone...Sorry...

To understand these graphs correctly:

the steady slope (straight line drawn through the dots) implies a fairly steady rate of AI outbreaks in Indonesia and in Egypt.

If future data points diverge from the "more or less" straight line, the line through the dots will bend into a curve. A curve will indicate a change in the rate of new outbreaks in H5N1. The line will bend by flattening off, indicating a drop in rate of new cases or by curving upwards, indicating an increase in rate of new cases. The line becomes flat when the rate of new outbreaks becomes zero. The line curves sharply up when the rate of new outbreaks increases sharply. The line stays the same when the rate of new outbreaks stays the same.

The rate of change in the curve on each chart, corresponds to deceleration or acceleration in the rate of disease onset.

It is important to note that these graphs have nothing to do with the current human infection rate of H5N1.

The graph of suspected cases that gsgs posted is interesting from a sociological point of view, but it bears no relationship to the number of actual, confirmed infected cases. Elsewhere, I have noted that graphing suspected cases will only show us one or more of the following:

1. That there is an increased awareness of H5N1 over time among the population in Indonesia and Egypt.

2. That potential bird flu infection is currently newsworthy in these countries.

3. That the number of bird flu newshounds has increased over time.

What we really want to know is how many individuals are H5N1 infected and confirmed. There is no basis to believe that that the number of confirmed cases is somehow correlated with the non-confirmed (suspected) cases in these countries. What we need to have is the results of the testing reported in a consistent fashion and follow up testing on cases that initially tested negative. In northern Egypt where there has been a near 100% CFR, It is obvious that "suspected" cases were usually not strickened with H5N1. With the emergence of strain in southern Egypt that is less symptomatic, there may be unreported, untested cases.

The only graphs that have interpretive value for infection rates are those that compare the number of positive cases with all of the tested (both positive and negative) cases.

Re: HUMAN AI CASES in BREAKING FORUM - LINK

Re: HUMAN AI CASES in BREAKING FORUM - LINK

I had been assuming that suspected and confirmed counts
were strongly correlated.

Well, this can be tested... the confirmed cases are also listed
in the summaries, where I got the data from, but it's tedious to collect
the data, maybe someone can help, so we can include those
in the graphics.

Wait, doesn't WHO provide all the confirmed cases regularly ?
I'll check whether we can easily calculate the correlations from that...

However, confirmed cases are rare, but suspected are much more frequent,
that's why I graphed suspected ones.
It would be useful to examine the correlation.
Unfortunately the summaries of suspected cases counts
collected from foreign newspapers etc. don't go back so long,
basically they started in late 2006, I think.

Re: HUMAN AI CASES in BREAKING FORUM - LINK

Re: HUMAN AI CASES in BREAKING FORUM - LINK

What is the correlation coefficient?

Re: Gsgs - Human Egypt and Indonesia cases graph

correlation coefficient is not very useflu yet,
too few confirmed cases.

correlation coefficient for 2007 of counts of
weekly,2weekly,3,4,5-weekly numbers of suspected vs. confirmed cases for
Indo:-0.12,-0.21,+0.15,+0.51,1
Egypt:-0.17,-0.22,+0.16,-0.75,1
sum:-0.43,-0.64,-0.42,-0.14,1

..if I made no mistake

counts are interpolated when new counts were not available on some day

Re: Gsgs - Human Egypt and Indonesia cases graph

bump this. Pictures in the first post are still being updated,
but only about once per month now.
Egypt slows down considerably, while Indonesia remains linear.

Laidback Al, maybe you have an updated list of confirmed cases
for the blue curve.

Re: Gsgs - Human Egypt and Indonesia cases graph

Here is the list of WHO confirmed cases since Jan 1 (44) including the most recent 15 confirmed cases from Indonesia. Some of the dates have changed by a few days based on the WHO information update.
