An alert was sent out after military members pulled into the school, got out of a van with military gear on and what appeared to be a gun, but was a radio pack.

GREENWOOD, Ark. — Greenwood Jr. High School went on a temporary lockdown Monday, Oct. 11, after a military training exercise nearby caused confusion.

According to Greenwood Police Chief Will Dawson, two members of a visiting military group pulled into the Jr. High parking lot and got out of a van with vests on and camo.


Dawson says they had on a radio pack that appeared to be a gun barrel over their shoulder.

A school official used the panic button to put out the alert and elicit a response. School security and several police agencies got the alert and responded...

Two members of a visiting military group pulled into the JR High parking lot and got out of a van with vests on and camo. They were in the area doing an exercise. They had on a radio pack that appeared to be a gun barrel over their shoulder. A school official used the panic button to put out the alert and elicit a response. School security and several police agencies got the alert and responded. Officers and school officials were on scene almost immediately. It was at that time that the alert was cancelled and contact was made with the proper military agency to ensure this does not happen again.
We are frustrated with the lack of communication or the decision to pull into the school parking lot, but obviously happy with the response to the threat. The system worked as it should. A meeting is already happening today between the school, the police department, and the military unit.

Are these the same six or so guys at Bell park the other day in plate carriers, radios, and matching dark gray Tacomas with camper shells, half of them in camo and the other half wearing (dead serious) Hawaiian shirts?

So what was up with them on the scanner saying they had 1 juvenile in custody ??? Also the dog was then ran thru the school to clear it after that juvenile was in custody?????

[] no juvenile was ever in custody and our K-9 never entered any school.

[] I guess you can believe what you want. These are the facts. We anticipate something to be released by the military group at some point. All we know is the 188th Fighter Wing was unaware of any activity in this area for today’s date. This group was expected to report to the 188th tomorrow for a week long training exercise. The 188th has since cancelled that training due to the incident today. The 188th was extremely helpful and we appreciate the relationship we have with them. It’s being addressed.

I’ve seen these guys before they don’t always look military but have military grade type toys. I can see the confusion.
