Greece Influenza 2016 - 406 treated in ICU, 190 fatalities

Retired 2020
H3N2 flu strain caused the death of a 59 year old man in Greece

By Olga Mavrou / 14/01/2016 / No Comments

Athens, January 14, 2015/Independent Balkan News Agency

By Olga Mavrou

There are 4 deaths from influenza in Greece and one of them is attributed to H3N2 type A flu virus. Yet for the majority of patients with severe flu symptoms in Greek hospitals the cause of their illness is the H1N1 strain, which might have mutated.
...
Except for the 59 year old man who died in Larissa hospital, all the others got sick from the H1N1 strain and this leads the authorities to the conclusion that the H1N1 strain might have mutated to a more aggressive form.

http://www.balkaneu.com/h3n2-flu-str...ar-man-greece/

Comment: Mutation is not a requirement for H1N1 influenza to cause fatalities. It's been doing that from day one. Without sequence data, information on vaccine status or whether the patients have comorbidities would be useful. - Ro

[h=1]Influenza-related Deaths Reach Record Levels in Greece This Year[/h]
The number of influenza-related deaths in Greece has jumped to 38, with 4 people having died in one day alone, according to local media sources. The number of people that needed hospitalization has increased to nearly 200, while a major concern of doctors and the nation?s medical authorities is that this year?s seasonal influenza seems to be affecting people whose average age is below 60 years of age and who had no prior medical conditions.
In the meantime, with the nation?s public healthcare system in virtual collapse, many Greek hospitals have a low number of available beds, with many patients being forced to wait for weeks before they get admitted for treatment.

Flu death toll rises to 51 in Greece, doctors urge vaccinations

By Marina Spyropoulou / 05/02/2016 / No Comments

Athens, February 5, 2016/Independent Balkan News Agency

Seven people lost their lives of flu complications over the past 24 hours in Greece, taking the death toll this season to 51, among them three children, according to the latest statistics by the Greek Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO).

There were 114 patients being treated at intensive-care units throughout the country on Friday after contracting the H1N1 influenza virus, while a total of 233 people have been treated at Greek ICUs since the beginning of winter.

The dramatic increase of cases over the past few weeks has alarmed KEELPNO epidemiologists who fear that this year’s flu epidemic may be similar to the 2010-2011 season, when Greece recorded 180 deaths.

Health professionals are in particular concerned because this year the flu strain affects more young people with no prior serious health conditions. More than half of the cases in intensive care are otherwise healthy people.
