Number of people who have died from H1N1 virus rises to 16

Two more people who had contracted swine flu have died, officials said yesterday, taking to 16 the total number of H1N1 sufferers who have died in Greece.

Only two of these people did not have underlying health problems. The latest victims were a 42-year-old man who had already been suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and a 26-year-old man who was diagnosed as obese. Officials have warned that anyone weighing 140 kilos or more is particularly at risk from the virus. On Thursday, the 1135 helpline had received almost 20,000 inquiries in less than 24 hours.

Five flu deaths in single day

The number of people that have died after contracting swine flu rose to 25 yesterday with five deaths recorded in just over 24 hours.

Doctors noted that while most of the fatalities involved patients who had underlying ailments, one of the five new deaths was a 40-year-old woman with no other medical problems.

The other four deaths announced yesterday were a 48-year-old obese man with leukaemia, a 54-year-old with a serious metabolic ailment, an 80-year-old woman with chronic kidney failure and a 70-year-old with acute pancreatitis.

Thousands of citizens continued to visit inoculation centers yesterday, bringing the number of those vaccinated in Greece to 124,968.

Meanwhile schools continued to close across the country, including all schools in the northwestern prefecture of Ioannina, as the number of pupils displaying symptoms of swine flu rises.
