Greece Faces Measles Increase

A new report from Greece?s National Centre for the Control and Prevention of Diseases says it is impossible to rule out not only a rise in measles cases but also their spread across the country.

It reports that 77 new cases have pushed up the total to just over 1,260.

In late December, the body confirmed 922 measles cases in Greece, most concerning Roma children and people aged 25-44 who were not properly immunized.

This latest report claims the profile of patients remains the same; mainly Greek citizens, mostly young children from Roma communities and people from the general population between 25-44...

ATHENS, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Five patients died within the past week from complications after contracting the seasonal flu virus, while the measles epidemic also continues, the Greek Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) announced on Thursday...

...Within the past week, 100 new cases of measles were recorded, bringing the total number of cases confirmed since last year to 1,362, KEELPNO said in a separate press announcement on Thursday.

Most cases, as well as the two casualties so far, concerned Greek Roma children, the center noted. Many cases also concerned Greeks aged 25 to 44, who were not properly immunized against measles, KEELPNO scientists added.

Measles Claims Third Greek Victim, Raising Fears

A 35-year-old woman who had been given a measles vaccine dose has become the third victim of the disease in Greece, after she died of pneumonia and respiratory failure.

To date, as reported by the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention (KΕELPNO), 1,588 cases of measles have been recorded in Greece, with a higher occurrence in the southern part of the country.

The vast majority of victims are Greek citizens, mostly young children from Roma communities and people from the general population in the 25-44 age group who are not immune to measles. Also, some non-vaccinated health professionals are among the victims.

Overall, three deaths from laboratory-confirmed cases of measles have been recorded so far in Greece.

The first victim was an 11-month-old toddler with underlying dystrophy, while the second was a 17-year-old Roma who died of encephalitis, according to KEELPNO...

Measles cases on the increase

The measles outbreak in Greece is showing no signs of slowing down, with the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (KEELPNO) saying Thursday that there have been 1,829 recorded cases since last May.

The center said the number of cases doubled in the first two months of the year, compared to 922 reported in late December.

According to KEELPNO, there have so far been three measles-related deaths in under a year...
