At least 77 people have been hospitalized for flu this year in Greece, and 18 have died of complications resulting from the contagious virus, Kathimerini understands.

The trend, experts warn, is worse compared to 2013 ? a statistically average year ? when a total of 108 flu patients were admitted to intensive-care units during the entire season. They say the country is currently only nearly halfway through flu season and are warning about the local population?s low vaccination rate. So far all victims belonged to so-called high-risk groups, yet none appears to have been immunized against the flu.

Meanwhile, scientists at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) say that the infection rate is expected to remain the same through February.

Speaking to Kathimerini, Athens University professor and KEELPNO expert Sotiris Tsiordas said that the high flu activity will continue for at least four more weeks.

Negative European preeminence in terms of high speed transmission of the influenza virus, gets the Greece, with health authorities being in perpetual alarm. The wave of influenza affecting the country has caused 26 deaths so far and many even heavy patients in intensive care units. The Greece among 29 European countries has the largest circulation of the virus and especially dangerous strain a(H1N1). at European level, great subscription gripwdoys display cases spread apart from Greece, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Italy, Malta, Spain and Great Britain, while the other 22 countries activity is low. The basic cause of the great influenza outbreak in our country is, according to scientists, the low vaccination coverage of vulnerable groups and the non-timely granting of antivirals drugs, something that can be linked to the financial crisis and the less attention we show our citizens for their health.

Two to three deaths per day related to ongoing influenza epidemic

About two to three people in Greece succumb to the latest influenza outbreak on a daily basis, raising the death toll to 63 in the past couple weeks. In most cases, the victims had not been inoculated against the flu, despite doctor recommendations.

The Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis explained that people must remain calm and seek out appropriate medical help. Mr. Georgiadis admitted that there was a shortage of anti-flu shots, as they were ordered based on last year?s milder flu outbreak, but added that the flu season is over and that figures will drop.

The Athens Medical Association announced that the lack of an inoculation policy in Greece is ?criminal?, since it contributes to a significant number of people eschewing preventative inoculation due to ?possible side effects?.

Due to the number of H1N1 cases, the hospital pharmacies will be handing out free anti-viral medication. Roche Hellas announced that availability of its Tamiflu anti-viral medication is uninterrupted.

Deaths from flu rise to 79 in Greece

The outbreak of the flu in Greece has reached alarming levels with fatalities rising to 79 this winter, according to the latest data released Wednesday.

In the last 24 hours five patients who had been diagnosed with the H1N1 flu strain, died from complications, Xinhua quoted health authorities as saying.

According to experts of the Greek Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO), most victims were suffering from some underlying diseases, while they had not been vaccinated.

Only a third of Greeks belonging to high-risk groups has been immunised this year, according to estimates. Lack of funds in the health system and incapability of people to pay for the anti-flu shots let them exposed to the flu.

KEELPNO announced that 217 people have been hospitalised with the flu this year, with 49 patients currently under observation at intensive care units.

Last year Greece had recorded a total of 49 flu-related casualties.

Experts express fears for a higher toll exceeding the 100 dead by the end of the cycle of the seasonal flu in Greece which is expected to close in April.

They recommend in particular to people of high-risk groups, such as elderly and underage people, or patients suffering from cardiovascular or respiratory illnesses, to get vaccinated and get anti-flu drugs without delay when the first flu symptoms appear.
