GP surgeries running out of flu vaccine after surge in cases
GP surgeries are running out of the seasonal flu vaccine after a surge in cases, with manufacturers warning they have no supplies left.

By Rebecca Smith and Stephen Adams 10:20PM GMT 05 Jan 2011

In one of the worst flu outbreaks in recent years, surgeries in Oxfordshire, Kent, Derbyshire, Hertfordshire and Gloucestershire have all reported vaccine shortages.

Dr Peter Holden, a GP in Matlock, said: "In Derbyshire ? with just over one million people in total ? we have 1,300 doses left.

"I suspect this is not a different story from elsewhere in the country. I have been talking to colleagues this afternoon and I think the bottom line is this: there's enough vaccine for pregnant women who need it, and that's it."

Another doctor said yesterday that her surgery in Dulwich, south London, had run out of doses as those who were eligible for the jab on the NHS finally came forward because of fears that the virus was spreading.

Dr Rosemary Leonard said her waiting list was "growing by the hour" and she called on supermarkets and pharmacies to hand over their stocks to the health service so that at-risk groups could benefit.

Margaret Hickmott-Stapely, the manager of The Westerham Practice in Westerham, Kent, said doctors were having to ration doses to the most vulnerable as supplies were running low.

She said: "We are having to prioritise who gets it as we have only got a very small supply remaining. I've tried three manufacturers and I've not been able to get any."

In some areas hit by the shortages, GP practices with surplus stocks have had to donate their supplies to those without until new batches arrive from wholesalers or elsewhere. Vaccine manufacturers warned last night that they had run out and could make no more...

Government admits flu vaccines shortage
Wed Jan 5 2011 23:37:59

The Government has admitted some parts of England are short of flu vaccines and is considering bringing in more stocks from Europe.

Suppliers have been asked to contact their factories in Europe for a count of how many stocks of UK-licensed vaccine are available.

The Government has no central stockpile of seasonal flu vaccines, which are ordered every year by GPs and delivered to surgeries...

Eight-month wait for more flu jabs as stocks run outBy Sophie Borland

Drug firms have been ordered to produce extra flu jabs amid a national shortage of supplies. The Government admitted yesterday there are ?local supply issues? with vaccinations in parts of the country.

Earlier this week the Government contacted the six drug companies licensed to make the vaccine, asking them to supply extra jabs as soon as possible.
But most delivered their last remaining doses to GP surgeries in November.

Last night a spokesman representing the UK Vaccine Industry Group admitted there were just ?a few thousand? remaining.

They say it will take at least eight months to produce extra vaccines and the Government is considering shipping in stock from European countries which have been less affected by flu.

Patients deemed to be at risk of life-threatening forms of flu have been told to ?call back in a few weeks?, while GPs admit they have no idea when new supplies will be delivered.

Britain is experiencing one of its worst flu outbreaks in more than a decade and intensive care units across the country are full.
...

However, experts predict figures released today will show more than 200 cases per 100,000 ? officially making it an epidemic.

...

Drugs firms licensed to make the jab ? Baxter, GlaxoSmithKline, Novartis, Sanofi Pasteur, Solvay Healthcare, and Wyeth ? delivered 14.7million doses to surgeries this winter.

GPs order in the vaccines they expect will be needed, based on previous years. But it is thought many underestimated demand.

A Department of Health spokesman said: ?We are working with the NHS to ensure available supplies of surplus vaccine are moved to where there is a need.?

CRISIS AS THE FLU JAB STARTS TO RUN OUT IN MANY AREAS

The crisis has exposed a fundamental flaw in the way the NHS orders in seasonal flu jabs.

Daily Express GP Dr Rosemary Leonard said the situation was ?a complete mess?. She revealed most GPs in the capital are running out of the vaccine and warned the problem could be nationwide.

...

?Pregnant women need this jab and it is not their fault they are only turning up for it now, as most did not know they were pregnant before.

?I would urge big companies such as supermarkets who are giving it to the ?worried well? to donate stocks to the NHS to help protect those who really need it.?

But businesses are so far refusing to hand over their stocks and claim they are starting to run low themselves.

...

Unlike every other child vaccine, seasonal flu jabs are not ordered centrally by the NHS. GPs have to order it from suppliers themselves.

Although 14.5 million patients are considered ?at-risk? and in need of the jab, family doctors usually only order enough vaccine to cover between 60 and 70 per cent of this group because many do not turn up.

Surgeries have to pay up-front so they try not to waste money by over-ordering.

GPs had to order vaccine stocks in March and based their estimates on the usual uptake. But when deadly swine flu made a comeback in December patients flocked to surgeries, taking the doctors by surprise. On top of this, the Government only decided to vaccinate pregnant women at a late stage, putting even more pressure on GPs? supplies.

Suppliers are now sourcing more jabs from outside the UK. It is thought 70,000 jabs are waiting to be imported from Holland but this could prove a drop in the ocean.
