government-media relationship, secrecy

Registered User
recently I noticed more secrecy in NY-government statements
than before. Often they decline to answer reporter questions,
no updates on the webpages, no comments on recent deaths,
hospitalizations.

Have you also noticed that ? Is it due to some differences
about the reporting ?

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

the worse it gets the less they say about it. What was that old bit of advice ?.... "Don't listen to what I say, watch what I do"

:magnify:

In my thread - http://www.flutrackers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110354 - which is an attempt to track the more severe symptoms involving Cytokine Storm, Organ Failure & Cyanosis (all of which have similarities to 1918), I routinely do Searches on combinations, such as.... "H1N1 organ".

There is NOTHING!!! I mean, you see stories with deaths, and they keep coming up with new "Catch phrases" to indicate horribly bad problems - but there is simply NO DATA attached. I think they are issuing mass guidance to health agencies down to the very detail of the wording of information release, in order to keep it off the internet.

That might sound paranoid and conspiracy theory oriented.... But look at the young Jonathan Zamora case out of New York. THAT case was the 1st really big instance of a case that let slip about "Cyanosis". When it 1st broke - the initial "seed story" was immediately removed from the internet. If a small handful of news agencies hadn't picked that up and kept it alive - it would have died within 30 minutes. And data about that particular case is STILL guarded as securely as the Gold in Fort Knox!

My opinion / observation is that the problem lies mainly with the Officials controlling the info. But I also suspect that the BIG News Media Conglomerates are being squashed as well. For instance, have you noticed that an overwhelming amount of news stories are done by small time outfits?

Thats one of the reasons I've started targeting smaller newspapers & media markets in press releases. They still have individual integrity. The CNN's, FOX's etc - I'm not so sure they can be trusted to tell the story.

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

so, is it really getting worse ?
ILI obviously is declining.

Maybe the increase in hospitalizations are old cases
from some hospitals missed before or redefined now
so they must be counted, while they had hoped earlier
that they didn't have to be included

anyway, they should comment. I speculate it could be
some revenche to the press for unfortunate earlier reporting ?

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

I haven't had the leisure to read the US government documents regarding "communication" during a pandemic phase 6. However, as an example, the French plan does contain a section which clearly directs media to issue the most soothing message possible to the masses: "inform but no worry, gov is in control." I'd venture that this gov attitude is the same worldwide. Since I'm one like many here who targets the Internet for our news, I can certainly say that information is becoming increasingly more difficult to find. Updates are becoming irregular, web sites have been revamped with more difficult news architecture, articles are placed in "social" rather than "health" columns, etc. It is unfortunate that it will probably take the illness or death of very public figures before Joe and Jane Citizen start understanding what is going on. Then, you'll get citizens sleuthing "organs", "DSC", "cyanosis", etc. not before.

If there are any small newspapers / journalists out there - this might be the time to SHINE! A tiny small time newspaper gets the same Google Search results as CNN or FOX. This is one of those rare moments in history that a situation exists that the liitle guys really can defeat Goliath!

All the conditions are ripe for small town reporters to tell the stories of the unsung victims in comunity hospitals - and take the story to the world. Because millions of people are crawling the Internet looking to see what is going on.

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

Some of these state health sites bury reports so deep that one would conclude they really didn't want anyone to read them.

Here in my county there were only 2 cases; so our pandemic is a non-issue. My friend says just about all of the people she talks to just laugh, pfft and a handwave..."What swine flu?" they ask.

There is nothing in our local papers about it, after the initial reporting on our 2 cases and the first couple up in Michigan.

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

we can overcome this. What's on the internet can be found or they find us.
We just have to improve our organisation, share the tasks to find good
news-sources, rate them, recruit more members to search ...
a real flutrackers organization. Currently I feel most is still
"smalltalk", opinions, personal experiences.
Not the stuff you would want to see in a good panflu-source
replacing the (censored) newspapers

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

Considering who reads here at FT, I think our opinions are important.

The govts need to know we are smart enough to see beyond what we read. We don't just hear their words and believe what they tell us.

We still keep the news threads (mostly) free of comments.

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

Well as they say about government, you either live under the 'big lie' or under the 'big stick'. And the key to maintaining the 'big lie' is to control information. Which is sad because the only business that is explicitly protected by the U.S. Constitution is the Press.

Ehm.
In my opinion, after many years of crawling the Internet, and watching the various flu unfolding situations reported more detailed after 2005, I think that such bug-creepy illnesses readings, were missed from the vast majority of the population (apart of its possibility to access the web).

The cited milions minority, which obviously include various health specs, did not demonstrate enaugh official devotion to divulgate an real pandemic awareness to the world populations, nor to the local populations.
They commented between theirs guildes, but not in a manner to set up the neccessary field trainings/stocks preparedness, but mainly on paper/digits.

It could exists tones of well structured scientifical explanations and awareness on the Internet, easily reached by Google/..., and stil, such materials or it's summary, will very little, or non, reach the vast masses in a way to change their's behavior.

That's because stil the main populations mass behavior inductor remains the TV (even if sometimes the web helps).
The "old" way of distributing events, or the way of "reading" the events, by TV news.

So, if the TV circuits (especialy the main ones) did not picked up such Googled news and inserts it with an right (not irisory) comment, possible in the begining of the news, and continues to track it after,
that news will miss the majority of the masses, and as an Internet news only, will not product an measurable change of view in the psichology of the masses, because it's about an event stil delayed in time, and with diferent affecting intensity worldwide, at the moment.

When it became visible to all, it will be already late.

Because of the above, along the informing of small players, it is important to get somebody from the big ones, to continue where they stop after the mexican country illness reports.

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

Hello!
I am not a medical professional, dr. nurse, healthcare worker, scientist, virologist...I am just a person who loves being informed. I have been an avid reader of Dr. Niman's recombinomics, H5N1croftsblogtypepad and also effect measure since 2005. I am very grateful that I can find detailed information (despite much of it being beyond my comprehension) from what I have come to discern to be reliable and trustworthy sources. I have tried numberous times to turn my family, friends and co-workers onto these sources or even just tell them some of the things I have been learning but this has only earned me the 'nut-job' label. I am aways ribbed about how the dreaded bird flu never materialized as a pandemic. And with the H1N1 pandemic, it's the same. Basically, everywhere I go people view those who take the pandemic seriously as "chicken littles"...recently I have been talking to family & friends about the question of underlying health conditions in those that have died, the multiple organ failure issue & other comparisons to 1918 and other nifty things I've learned and they simply think that unless they hear an official news report on CNN or from the WHO or CDC, no information can be trusted and that its just the experts spouting crazy theories.
I want to thank all contributors to this website for all their hard work. Despite the majority of people who are minimizing H1N1, I am sure there are persons as myself out there who are visiting this website & the others I mentioned..just common people who are happy to get some 'underground' information. Too bad more haven't caught on :-):)

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

Welcome, Sandracarlucci.

What many do not have information for: H5N1 is still alive and doing what it does well. Perhaps, it is just waiting to catch a ride-

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

Hi,

You see, here, the situation is so much worse that what they say. Hospital in Montreal are overload and they are starting to prepare the non traditional site of traitement. (remember that photo of 1918...) Their ICU are crowded. See also the commentary of a md in Manitoba.

I think we need to find local newpapers who talk to those on the front line. I'm pretty upset by the official line...

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

Welcome the the secret world of influenza Sandracarlucci. And welcome to FTs.

I can tell you that your realizations regarding this pandemic and the threat from a severe pandemic like that from the H5N1 bird flu is entirely rational.

We old-timers have been at this for years and have all experienced the same frustrations you mention regarding communicating your concerns about this threat to others both within and outside your family.

Many of us have analyzed this phenomenon and most have come to the conclusion that we are neither insane or deluded.

In fact, what appears to be most likely is that the general public and many of our administrative and elected officials are suffering from delusion. When I say most I mean most but not all. There is a core group of people who know the score, in fact they know it much better than we veteran students of influenza because they posses data on this novel H1N1 swine flu virus and the feared H5N1 virus that has not been made public.

My advice to you is to study this issue thoroughly. Learn as much as you can as quickly as you can because time has now become of the essence. You need to decide for yourself if this is something you need to concern yourself with because if you decide it is, then what you must do is prepare for it.

Preparing for the coming pandemic takes time, costs lots of money and is a difficult task. Fortunately for you, if you decide that preparing for the pandemic makes sense, there are many established resources you can call upon that we have prepared and saved on this site and on other flu sites like www.getpandemicready.com.

So, what you need to do is decide for yourself what you need to do. Don't pay attention to me or anyone else, as there is too much at risk for you to do so. You must make this choice for your family and yourself. There is no one else who will do it for you.

If you decide that preparing for the pandemic makes sense and the others in your family and circle of friends think you are a nut, do not relent. Know that we too have experienced the same opinions yet we persevered. You can too and regrettably someday those who scorn you today will thank you tomorrow. We take this action out of love for our family and friends and it is that love that keeps us plugging away.

Best regards in your quest,

Grattan Woodson, MD

Re: government-media relationship, secrecy

no comments on recent deaths
no update of hospitalization numbers
no more school-closure dates
no updates at ISDS since long

what else ?

someone please make a chart of the amount of secrecy of governments
as compared to the estimated number of H1N1 cases in that governance
over time
does more secrecy correlate with more cases (than expected) ?

rate US cities, counties, states by their amount of secrecy
in which states is influenza reportable ?

Colorado,Utah,Arizona, not in Illinois
