The Government claims New Zealand is now prepared to fight a potential influenza pandemic, after obtaining its targeted stockpile of the anti-viral drug, Tamiflu.
Health Minister, Pete Hodgson, says New Zealand has 1.2 million courses of Tamiflu - enough to treat 30% of the population. He says New Zealand is better prepared than most countries for a pandemic.
Stock of Tamiflu will be held in five secure facilities around the country to reduce the risk of it being destroyed in a fire or natural disaster.
Mr Hodgson says the Government is also storing masks and injectable antibiotics, and carrying out communication exercises.
He says that does not mean New Zealand will escape the effects of a pandemic, but is in good shape to fight one.
