GP practices across the UK will not lose out financially in the event of an influenza pandemic.
The agreement between the GPC and NHS Employers announced last week ensures that should practices respond to a pandemic emergency, they will not be disadvantaged if some or all routine GMS work needs to be suspended.
Their NHS income would be protected in line with the previous year's earnings and any pre-agreed uplift.
Income protection would start as soon as a pandemic was declared nationally (UK alert levels 2 or 3) and would be reviewed every three months.
GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman said: 'This agreement provides the necessary stability to allow GPs to get on with the job of treating sick patients.'
The guidance does not cover PMS practices.
