Panaji, July 28 - The suspected cases of H1N1 influenza from Quepem and Tiswadi blocks were admitted at Private Hospitals. One is a 42 year male and the other is a 6 year old girl respectively. There is no travel history. The throat swabs of these patients were collected and referred to NCDC-Delhi for testing. The sample from Quepem block has been confirmed positive for H1N1 Influenza while the other is reported Negative. The patient is recovering and is stable. All the family members and contacts are administered prophylactic treatment.

So far from June 2009, till dated the total number of H1N1 Influenza confirmed cases are 56. During the current year 2010 from January to July till date, a total of 30 samples of suspected cases were referred for testing and four are confirmed positive for H1N1 Influenza. The Core Committee for H1N1 review the situation every month and will now meet in August under the Chairmanship of the Chief Secretary Govt. of Goa.

Goa to monitor swine flu cases after death of woman

Panaji, Aug 4 (IANS) The Goa government Wednesday formed a high level committee to monitor cases of swine flu incidents after a 36-year-old woman succumbed to the H1N1 virus this week.
Goa Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane also the assembly that the committee would be headed by Chief Secretary Sanjiv Srivastava.

?The committee will send circulars to all schools asking them to keep check on the absenteeism patterns in schools and to isolate any possible cases of swine flu in Goa,? Rane said.

The directorate of health services will also monitor data on a regular basis to isolate any cases of the diseases.

Ratna Chauhan was admitted to Hospicio Hospital, Margao 35 kms from here, with pneumonia and succumbed to the disease a couple of days ago.

15 cases of swine flue detected in Goa within a week

Panaji, August 9- Swine flue has hit the state yet again with 15 lab confirmed cases of the disease reported during the week from 2nd August to 8th August 2010.
Seventy four cases of swine flue have been detected in Goa since the month of June 2009 according to the statistical data compiled by the directorate of health services (DHS). Out of 74 cases, 31 are from Salcete, 13 from Mormugao, 4 from Quepem, 14 from Tiswadi, 5 from Ponda, one from Bicholim and the rest were people residing outside Goa.
So far the total cases of H1N1 from January 2010 till date are 20, out of which one has expired. The Directorate of Health Services has issued the necessary guidelines to all the educational institutions to take precautionary measures. The awareness programmes on hand washing, hygiene, cough etiquettes have been stepped up at all levels to contain the spread of the disease in view of increased cases reported from the districts in the neighboring states. Public are requested to avoid crowded gatherings and avoid travel to the neighbouring districts in other states as far as possible in view of prevailing situation.

DHS told to ensure schools following swine flu guidelines

PANAJI: Health officials will now keep an eye on schools to ensure that they are complying with the guidelines for swine flu prevention issued by the directorate of education (DoE) last month.

This follows the August 13 meeting of the state core committee on swine flu, wherein chief secretary A K Srivastava asked director of health services Rajnanda Dessai to do so. Dessai confirmed the development to TOI on Wednesday.

Dessai, who is the member secretary of the committee, was directed to conduct inspections and to remain in touch with school heads through health officials to ensure that the DoE`s guidelines were being adopted.

Dessai had asked the DoE to issue a circular to schools late last month on measures to be taken to prevent the spread of the infection, after swine flu made a fresh appearance in nearby Pune.

The circular requires schools to intimate the nearest health centre on a daily basis about the number of students showing flu symptoms. Schools have also been advised to avoid large gatherings of students to reduce the possibility of the infection spreading.

Some education officials, in sections of the media, had raised fears that schools were not observing the guidelines. They pointed out to some schools practicing for programmes where a large number of students had to come together.

In this scenario, the latest instructions by the chief secretary will serve as a sharp reminder to schools that they are being watched by not just the DoE.

Meanwhile, the circular also asks schools to make it mandatory for class teachers to screen each student at the beginning of the day so as to detect students with flu symptoms. The symptoms include mild fever with cough, sore throat with or without body ache, headache, diarrhoea and vomiting.

Swine flu counter ticks on in Goa - 9 more cases reported today


Panaji, August 23 ? Nine more confirmed cases of swine flu have been reported in Goa today. The report of the 31 throat swabs of suspected cases of H1N1 were referred to National Centre for Disease Control, Delhi of which total of 9 have been confirmed positive.

Of the 9 cases, 5 were reported in Salcette, and one each in Tiswadi, Mormugao , Canacona, and Quepem.

This brings the total number of swine flu cases in 2010 to 49, with the detailed distribution as follows Salcette (20), Quepem(3), Ponda (3), Tiswadi(10), Bardez(2), Sanguem(2), Marmugao(8) and Canacona(1).

Since the outbreak of the dreaded disease in India in May 2009 a total of 115 lab confirmed cases of swine flu have been reported since the week ending 22nd August 2010.

The Directorate of Health Services has geared up its Surveillance machinery to detect and treat the H1N1 cases at the earliest. The medicines are now made available at the Health Centers wherever cases are reported.

The workshops for teachers are being organized to prevent the incidence of such cases in educational institutions.

H1N1 awareness drives get under way in South Goa



MARGAO: The South Goa district administration has started a major awareness programme to combat the spread of H1N1 influenza, with special emphasis on schools and slums. Officials said the cleanliness and sanitation drives have also been started in view of the upcoming festive season and its large gatherings of people.

At a recent meeting of stakeholders, health officers submitted their action plans to counter swine flu to the south Goa collector G P Naik. The meeting also discussed strategies to immediately commence work in various targeted areas defined as high risk zones, including slums and schools.

Accordingly, while sanitation drives and awareness programmes on oral hygiene are being conducted by the district administration with the help of health workers, the collector has also issued circulars to schools warning of action if they fail to adhere to guidelines.

Notices have also been issued to schools and parent teachers' associations to report any cases of fever/cold and any absenteeism. Sources said cells of the Indian Medical Association ( IMA) in Margao and Sanvordem have also been roped in and a road map has been created to deal with H1N1 influenza.

"The road map states that any cold/fever should be immediately reported to the doctor for a line of treatment. If the sickness persists, the doctor should immediately put the patient on Tamiflu. In deteriorating cases, throat swabs are to be taken. Even before the test report arrives, the patient is already put under medication," explained nodal and health officer of Margao urban health centre Dr Geeta Kakodkar.

She added that the coordination between the directorate of health services (DHS) and the private health sector is healthy. "Private practitioners are referring patients to the DHS. Samples of throat swabs are coming from many of these hospitals and patients are being immediately put on a line of treatment," she said.

Stating "the system seems to fall in place and there is no need for the public to panic", she adds, "The public needs to be aware of only the basic guidelines like washing hands and avoiding crowded places, to help the administration tackle swine flu."

A workshop for school teachers was also conducted where schools were instructed to maintain registers of students remaining absent and to monitor all students for flu and cold before classes start.

"The schools are also required to promote frequent hand-washing, clean benches, desks and tables at the end of the school day. They are to monitor fever cases and absenteeism and inform heath officers of increasing absenteeism," said collector G P Naik.

Four swine flu cases reported in Salcete

Panaji, Goa ? Four more swine flu cases have been reported in Salcete today taking the total toll of swine flu patients in the taluka to 24 for the year 2010.

The report of the 22 throat swabs of suspected cases of H1N1 referred to National Centre for Disease Control, Delhi has been received. A total of 4 have been confirmed for H1N1 and all are from Salcette Taluka.

A total of 73 samples from Salcete taluka were sent for swine flu testing of which 24 have been reported to be positive.

All the patients have received anti-viral treatment and have recovered. So also all the contacts have been given prophylactic treatment.

This brings the total number of Positive cases in Goa for 2010 to 53, with the detailed breakup is as follows Salcette(24), Tiswadi (11), Bardez(2),Murmugao(7), Sanguem(2),Ponda(3), Canacona(1), Quepem(3), outside patients(12).

Public are advised to consult the doctor in case of flu like symptoms persists so that further medical attention is received. Also those with flu like symptoms should avoid going to offices/ Educational Institutions and also avoid going to crowded places, until recovery. Home quarantine will prevent the transmission to others.

Goa witnessed 61 swine flu cases this year

Goa continues to witness A (H1N1) cases. Of the 12 throat swabs of suspected cases of A (H1N1) that were referred by the Goa health authorities to the National Centre for Disease Control in Delhi from the 30th of September to October 2nd, 1 sample was found to be positive. This brings the total number of Positive cases to 61 in the state.



The total number of samples sent from January 2010 till date is 278 and the Number of samples found positive for H1N1 are 61. Salcete has reported the highest positive H1N1 cases of 28, while the no positive cases have been reported in Sattari, Pernem and Bicholim.



Last year altogether 52 confirmed cases were detected and there were 5 deaths related to swine flu, out of which three were non-goans. This year, there has been only one death so far though 61 confirmed cases have been detected.

Figures show that from January 2010 till date, of the 119 samples sent from Salcete, 28 tested Positive for H1N1 while of the 18 samples sent from Quepem Taluka 3 tested Positive. In Sanguem Taluka, of the 3 samples sent, 2-tested Positive. In Mormugao, 7 samples tested positive of the 32 samples sent for testing. Out of the 5 samples sent from Canacona Taluka, only one tested positive while of the 59 samples sent from Tiswadi, 15 tested positive. From Bardez, 17 samples were sent and 2 tested positive and 18 samples were sent from Ponda Taluka of which 3 tested positive. From Pernem 3 samples were sent and all tested negative. Of the 2 samples sent each from Sattari and Bicholim Talukas, none tested positive.
