Giant African Land Snails Infesting South Florida

Residents of Miami-Dade County in southern Florida are dealing with the removal and eradication of hundreds, or perhaps thousands, of giant African land snails.

The snails are not native to the United States and are able to reproduce quickly. The scientific name for the snails is Achatina fulica. The snails begin laying eggs at about five to six months, according to Columbia.edu. Each snail produces between 10 and 400 eggs per laying. In ideal conditions, a single snail can produce between 900 and 4,000 eggs a year.
