Identification, isolation and treatment of patients, contact tracing, vaccination of exposed health workers and a massive awareness campaign: the Ghana Health Service has announced its roadmap to counter this new epidemic of mpox . Of more than 300 suspected cases across the country, 45 have been confirmed as of May 31, the date of the last report.

Asked about the likely evolution of the epidemic, the government declined to provide any figures for the time being, but confirmed that the number of cases is likely to increase in the coming days, or even weeks.

The clade 2 strain of the mpox virus circulating in Ghana is, according to health authorities, less dangerous than the variant currently raging in Central Africa. The government nevertheless urges Ghanaians to seek emergency medical care if they experience symptoms and to avoid contact and transportation as much as possible if in doubt, as the virus is transmitted primarily through skin-to-skin contact.

In 2022, the virus infected 120 people in the country, causing the death of four of them.
