The first suspected case of Ebola disease has been recorded at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.

The case is said to have resulted in the death of the victim, a 12-year-old girl. Health officials in the Ashanti Region held an emergency meeting over the case earlier Sunday, April 6, 2014.

The victim was first admitted at the paediatric unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital with symptoms of fever and bleeding.

Confirming the incident to Joy News, deputy director of Public Health in the Ashanti region, Dr. Joseph Oduro said blood samples of the patient have already been sent to the Noguchi Memorial research institute in Accra for testing.

The test result, he noted, is expected to be known within 72 hours.

According to Dr. Oduro, it was during a post mortem that it was detected that the victim had internal bleeding.

He noted that the issue is alarming since neighbouring countries like Guinea and Liberia among other countries, have recorded cases of the viral infection.

The deputy director of Public Health in the Ashanti region further requested the members of public to immediately report any symptom experienced, to the nearest hospital.

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has recorded what could be the first case of Ebola virus in the country.
...
The Head of Public Health at KATH, Dr Dennis Laryea, told the Daily Graphic, ?What we have is a suspected virus haemorrhagic fever, which is being investigated.?

According to him, one of the possible causes could be yellow fever and not necessarily Ebola virus, noting, however, that the presence of the virus could only be confirmed after the test had been conducted on the blood sample.

He said although the facility was yet to confirm the virus, the authorities were not leaving anything to chance.

The Ministry of Health has allayed the fears of Ghanaians who were worried Ghana had recorded its first case of the deadly Ebola virus.

The Health Ministry Monday confirmed that a test from a 12-year-old girl?s blood who was suspected to have died from the virus in the Ashanti region proved negative.

The 12-year-old girl was first admitted at the pediatric unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi with symptoms of fever and bleeding.

Blood sample from the girl was sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for tests to confirm if Ghana had recorded its first case of ebola.

But speaking to XYZ News, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Tony Goodman stated that tests carried out on the girl?s blood revealed that she did not die from the ebola virus.

He added that since the tests were negative it means Ghana is yet to record any case of the ebola virus.

Ghana Health Service (GHS) Organises Training On Ebola Virus

Ghanaians have been advised to use gloves and other protective clothing when handling dead animals in order to prevent the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country.

Dr Badu Sarkodie, Head of Disease and Surveillance Department, Ghana Health Services (GHS), who gave the advice at a training program in Accra, yesterday, to educate Ghanaians about the Ebola Virus, also cautioned Ghanaians to wash their hands regularly after visiting sick relatives in hospitals or at home to help prevent the disease.

Dr Sarkodie disclosed that animals such as chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelopes and porcupines were animals likely to carry the virus.

EVD, he said, was a severe and fatal illness with 90% fatality rate, making it one of the most dangerous diseases in the world.

He said Ebola ?transmitted into the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions or other bodily fluids of infected animals?was characterized by sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, adding that the viruses could remain in bodily fluids for two (2) to twenty-one (21) days before being detected.

He said the virus could also be transmitted through semen and could occur up to seven weeks after clinical recovery.

Mr Michael Adjabeng, a representative from the International Health Regulation (IHR), said 248 clinical cases of Ebola including 171 deaths in Guinea had been reported as at the end of May 2014.

Mr Adjabeng disclosed that an existing surveillance system had been placed on alert in Ghana in case of any Viral Haemorrhagic Fever (VHF) of which EVD is part.

He added, however, that eight suspected cases of VHF were detected, with the results proving negative after a laboratory test was conducted on them.

He urged Ghanaians to report any case of suspected outbreak of EVD to any health officer or institution.
