Ghana Health Service (GHS) Organises Training On Ebola Virus
Ghanaians have been advised to use gloves and other protective clothing when handling dead animals in order to prevent the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country.
Dr Badu Sarkodie, Head of Disease and Surveillance Department, Ghana Health Services (GHS), who gave the advice at a training program in Accra, yesterday, to educate Ghanaians about the Ebola Virus, also cautioned Ghanaians to wash their hands regularly after visiting sick relatives in hospitals or at home to help prevent the disease.
Dr Sarkodie disclosed that animals such as chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelopes and porcupines were animals likely to carry the virus.
EVD, he said, was a severe and fatal illness with 90% fatality rate, making it one of the most dangerous diseases in the world.
He said Ebola ?transmitted into the human population through close contact with the blood, secretions or other bodily fluids of infected animals?was characterized by sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat, adding that the viruses could remain in bodily fluids for two (2) to twenty-one (21) days before being detected.
He said the virus could also be transmitted through semen and could occur up to seven weeks after clinical recovery.
Mr Michael Adjabeng, a representative from the International Health Regulation (IHR), said 248 clinical cases of Ebola including 171 deaths in Guinea had been reported as at the end of May 2014.
Mr Adjabeng disclosed that an existing surveillance system had been placed on alert in Ghana in case of any Viral Haemorrhagic Fever (VHF) of which EVD is part.
He added, however, that eight suspected cases of VHF were detected, with the results proving negative after a laboratory test was conducted on them.
He urged Ghanaians to report any case of suspected outbreak of EVD to any health officer or institution.
