ACCRA, July 17 (Reuters) - Ghana has destroyed 4,500 chickens and restricted the movement of poultry after nearly 6,000 birds were found to have died of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu, the country's veterinary services director said on Saturday.

The birds originated from seven farms in Ghana's greater Accra, Central and Volta regions, and poultry movement from those regions has been banned, veterinary director Patrick Abakeh told Reuters...

Bird Flu: Seven farms affected in Ghana

Dr Patrick Abakeh, Director, Veterinary Services Directorate, says seven farms have so far been affected by the Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) in the country.

In all, 5,811 birds died naturally on the affected farms, while the Veterinary Services destroyed 4,500 birds, he said.

The Director said the disease affected five farms in Greater Accra with 3,167 birds dead naturally and 300 destroyed.

It affected one farm in the Central Region with 2,400 birds dying naturally and 4,200 destroyed.

It also affected one farm in the Volta Region, with 224 birds dead naturally.

Dr Abakeh, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the bird flu disease was first detected on July 6 and samples taken to the laboratory and confirmed on July 8, 2021.

1,500 birds culled at Ketu South to prevent spread of bird flu

About 1,500 birds have been killed on a poultry farm at Torkor, near Denu, in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.

According to the regional veterinary team, samples taken from the farm tested positive on July 14th.

The Volta Regional Veterinary Officer, Dr Patrick Akande said a total of 129 birds, 124 cockerels and 5 turkeys died before the infected birds were culled.

According to Dr Fenteng Danso, it could be a challenge to control outbreaks among local fowls who are also exposed to the disease, adding that, “it is very important to fence the farms to avoid the spread, especially with the local ones around.”

Ashanti Region records bird flu cases

Ashanti Region is the latest to have recorded the Avian Influenza disease also known as Bird Flu in the country.

Three regions; the Greater Accra, Central and Volta regions, recorded such cases in various farms two weeks ago.

According to the Ashanti Regional Veterinary Officer, Dr. Marlon Mensah, the region’s first case was recorded in a poultry farm at Atwima Afrancho in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti region, after samples were taken for testing.

Speaking to Citi News, he noted that although the regional veterinary directorate has begun an exercise to depopulate the birds to contain the disease, they want all farmers to strictly comply with the bio-security measures. ..

The Risk Communicator for the Veterinary Service Directorate, Dr. Benjamin Kissi Sasu said in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, that its officers in the Northern, Western, Western North, Eastern and the Oti regions have been instructed to put in measures in order to prevent an outbreak of the disease in the regions.

“The outbreak began from three regions, then to four regions. So now, all the regions are on alert. The Emergency Response Team is dealing with the regions and continuing with the education and awareness creation. We are hoping that the Ministry [of Agric] will continue to support in terms of logistics and staff strength. So far, we are on guard, updating farmers and other stakeholders on what is happening,” he said.

According to the Veterinary Service Department, Ghana has recorded over 33,000 poultry deaths as a result of the Avian Influenza disease (bird flu) in the Greater Accra region, Volta region, Central region, and the Ashanti Region.

Bird Flu outbreak: Ban on movement of poultry products in Ashanti

The Ashanti Regional Directorate of Veterinary Services has placed a ban on the movement of poultry and poultry products within and from other regions and districts affected by the Avian Influenza (bird flu).

The move is to help curb the spread of the disease in other parts of the region.

Dr Marlon Mensah, Ashanti Regional Veterinary Director told the Ghana News Agency that so far two farms in the Atwima enclave had been hit by the disease in the Ashanti Region.

A total of 2,350 birds died from the disease in the affected farms while Veterinary officers destroyed over 3,200 birds.

Seven (7) bags of poultry feed and 28 crates of egg were also destroyed in the affected farms.

Dr Mensah, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that the bird flu disease was first detected on July 29, this year at a farm in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region...

Bird Flu kills 6,046 poultry birds in Tema West

A total of 6,046 poultry birds have died as a result of Avian Influenza (A-H5N1) – a highly pathogenic zoonotic avian influenza strain – in the Tema West Municipality.

Out of the total stock of 10,576 birds in eight affected farms, some 6,046 of the birds died and 4,530 were destroyed; Dr Emmanuel Kwao Pecku, Tema West Municipal Veterinary Officer, disclosed to the Ghana News Agency in Tema on Thursday.

He said in Lashibi and Klagon, where the first cases were recorded on July 8, 2021, some 1,290 died, and 300 were destroyed in Klogon.

Also, in Sakumono, 60 birds died while at the Klagon Water Works, where 650 birds were in stock, had 40 of them dying and 610 of them destroyed as at July 29, 2021.

“At the Lashibi DRC Swimming Pool, 606 birds died and 29 of them were destroyed,” he said, adding that, at the Livestock Farm, where the highest deaths of 3,539 birds were recorded, 3,461 of them were destroyed to prevent further spread of the disease.

“As at August 4, 2021, the Sakumono Community 16 had recorded 190 deaths and 10 of such birds had been destroyed, while in Tema Community 19 – Lashibi had recorded 320 deaths with 120 of them also destroyed,” he disclosed.

He said upon laboratory investigation, it was confirmed that the affected farms were infected with Avian Influenza (A-H5N1), a zoonotic avian influenza strain that is highly pathogenic...

Western North Region records bird flu disease

The Western North Regional Directorate of Agriculture, has destroyed hundreds of birds affected by the H5N1 avian influenza.

The outbreak, which occurred in the Farm of Mr. Samuel Mensah Kwarteng in the Ahodwo community in Bibiani- Anhwiaso-Bekwai- Municipality of the Western North Region is the first to be reported in the Region.

Bird Flu hit Western-North Region

Bird flu outbreak has been detected in the Western North Region, making it the newest Region to be affected by the flu since its outbreak.

Currently, the country’s case count stands at Greater Accra-28, Central region-5, Volta region 2 and Ashanti Region-7.

Risk Communicator, Ghana Veterinary Service (GVS), Dr Benjamin Kissi Sasu, told the Ghana News Agency that between August 16 and August 22, this year, a total of 58,349 birds had been affected by the flu.

He said as of August 22, the number of affected birds had risen to 107,704, indicating 49,355 new affected birds in the period.

Dr Sasu said while 36 cases were confirmed as of August 16, seven new cases had now increased the number to 43...

Bird Flu strikes in Bibiani as sixth farm affected in two weeks

The Bibiani-Ahwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Director of Agric Mr Augustine Amaning Kwarteng has expressed worry over the fast spread of the H5N1 Influenza also known as Bird Flu within the municipality.

Announcing the attack on the sixth farm in the municipality, Mr Amaning advised poultry farmers in the area to double up their steps in notifying any Agric office or Veterinary office when they notice any unfamiliar signs on their birds.

He also announced that the latest outbreak killed 8,500 birds bringing it to a total loss of 20,000 birds within two weeks in the Western North Region.

The owner of the newly affected poultry farm, Mr Adamu Abudu said he has lost GH500,000 to the death of his birds, and appealed to government to come to his aid...

The Sissala East Municipal Department of Agriculture has announced the outbreak of Avian Influenza, otherwise known as Bird Flu, at Tumu in the Upper West Region.

“On 3rd September, 2021, bird carcasses sent to the Accra Veterinary Laboratory tested positive for Avian Influenza from a commercial poultry farm in Tumu, Sissala East Municipality,” it said.
