Upper West records 15 suspected meningitis cases, 2 deaths

The Upper West Region has recorded a total of 15 suspected cases of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM), with four laboratory-confirmed cases and two deaths, between Week 1 and Week 5 of 2026.

According to the Upper West Regional Health Directorate, the suspected cases were reported in six districts. Nadowli-Kaleo District recorded the highest number with seven suspected cases, followed by Wa Municipal with three cases.

Sissala East District recorded two suspected cases, while Jirapa, Wa East and Wa West districts recorded one case each.

Four cases confirmed

Addressing the media in Wa last Tuesday, the Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Josephat A. Nyuzaghl, said four of the suspected cases had been confirmed through laboratory investigations.​..

Savannah Region Records CSM Death – 7 Suspected Cases Confirmed​

The Savannah Region has recorded one death from Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM), with seven suspected cases reported so far.

Speaking to Channel One News, the Savannah Regional Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr. Salifu Bawa, confirmed that out of the seven suspected cases, one has resulted in death, three tested negative, and three results are pending.​..

Ghana Health Service confirms 11 deaths due to cerebrospinal meningitis

​As of February 2026, Ghana is combating the seasonal cerebrospinal meningitis disease in the northern regions, particularly the Northern Region, Upper West Region, Savannah Region, and North East Region, where suspected and confirmed cases have been reported.

According to the Ghana Health Service, 11 deaths have been confirmed so far, a reminder of how quickly the disease can strike.

However, authorities say, they are working hard to control the outbreak...
