Six die of CSM in Upper West this year

Wa, Feb. 5, GNA - Out of 43 reported cases of Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (CSM), six people have died from the disease in the Upper West Region during the first four weeks of this year.

Jirapa and Lawra Districts recorded two deaths each while Sissala West and Lambussie Districts had one death each.

The situation of the disease in the region this year has therefore been described by the regional health authorities as normal, as it had not reached the "alert stage".

Beyond the alert stage is the epidemic, which is only declared when ten or more cases of the disease occur weekly.

Bolgatanga Hospital records 5 CSM related deaths

The Bolgatanga hospital has recorded five CSM related deaths from January.

It brings to nineteen, the total number of cases of CSM recorded at the Upper East hospital from the beginning of this year.

Meningitis claims 15 lives in Upper West

Wa, March 12, GNA - Fifteen people have so far died out of a total of 103 cases of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) recorded in the Upper West Region during the first two months of this year. This was made known by officials of the Regional Health Directorate at a meeting of the Regional Epidemic Committee at Wa to review preventive measures and the state of preparedness of the Region.

Northern Region records 16 deaths of CSM

Tamale, March 22, GNA - The Ghana Health Service in the Northern Region has recorded 16 deaths of cerebrum spinal meningitis (CSM) this year out of 95 cases reported at the various health facilities across the region.

This brings to 235, the total number of deaths so far from 2004 to 2011. Forty-four deaths were recorded in 2004, 16 in 2005, 27 in 2006, 22 in 2007, 46 in 2008, 27 in 2009, 37 in 2010.

Dr. Akwasi Twumasi, Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, told the GNA on Tuesday that the reduction was as a result of the intermittent rainfall in the region.

He said people were also educated and reported early to health facilities for treatement...

Joseph Yileh Chireh - Health MinisterHealth authorities at Obuasi are battling an outbreak of meningitis in the municipality. The disease has so far killed four persons in the past week at New Nsuta Estates, considered a first-class residential area. It is, however, yet to be confirmed whether the disease is cerebro-spinal meningitis (CSM), one of the most deadly strains of the disease.

The dead are two males and two females.
Seven other people suffering from the disease are receiving medical attention at the Obuasi Government Hospital.

Initially, residents were alarmed at what they described as “a strange disease” but laboratory examinations had proved that the four died of meningitis.

Obuasi health authorities prepare against possible outbreak of meningitis

Heath authorities in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region are making preparations against a possible outbreak of meningitis.

It follows reports of mysterious deaths in the New Estate area which are now being linked to the disease.

So far, 14 cases have been reported with 5 deaths.

CSM kills five in Obuasi

Health authorities in New Nsuta, a suburb of Obuasi in the Ashanti Region have their work cut out for them following the outbreak of a disturbing epidemic in the community.

The disease, yet to be confirmed, is believed to be an acute form of Cerebrospinal Meningitis. Five persons, two females and three males have already lost their lives after contracting the disease.

Seven others infected with the disease, are currently at the Obuasi Government Hospital, receiving medical treatment.

There were reports last year, 2010, that Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) had broken out in northern Ghana, killing about 27 people out of the 54 cases that were reported...

CONFIRMED: CSM Breaks Out In Obuasi

The Obuasi Municipal Director of Health, Dr. Kwasi Amankwah, on Wednesday confirmed to Kwami Sefa Kayi on PeaceFM?s ?Kokrokoo? that the strain which had been recorded in New Nsuta, a suburb of Obuasi in the Ashanti Region was indeed Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis or CSM.

Earlier investigations proved inconclusive on what strain of Meningitis had plagued the community which has so far infected fourteen (14) people with 5 deaths recorded.
