West Nile viruses have been discovered in five birds that have died in Germany. The virus can also be transmitted to humans by mosquitoes.

Dresden / Berlin - With the detection of West Nile virus (WNV) in a hawk in Saxony, the pathogen has now been discovered in five birds in Germany.

In addition to the current two cases from Saxony-Anhalt and Bavaria have been registered, said a spokeswoman for the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI). Due to increased examinations, further cases in the coming weeks are not excluded.

A few weeks ago , the virus was detected in a decayed bearded owl from the Halle / Saale Zoo (Saxony-Anhalt) . It was the first confirmed West Nile case of a bird in Germany at all.

Samples of dead wild birds sent to the National Reference Laboratory for West Nile Virus Infections at the FLI are always screened for the Usutu virus and the West Nile virus.

The Usutu virus, like the West Nile virus, is transmitted by mosquitoes to wild birds. It has been increasingly detected in wild birds in recent weeks, but unlike the West Nile virus, it is not required to report and notify.[/FONT]

West Nile virus also in blackbirds in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Four weeks after the nationwide first findings in a bearded owl in Halle (Saale), the West Nile virus has also been detected in a dead blackbird from the district of Rostock. This is the first proof of infection in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, informed the environment and agriculture ministry in Schwerin on Thursday.

Birds are considered the most important host of the virus, which can be transmitted by mosquito bites on horses or humans. First, it had been assumed that the blackbird was suffering from the Usutu virus circulating in Germany for a long time and had died. However, more detailed investigations at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) on the island of Riems have revealed that it is a West Nile virus infection.
