Increased number of hantavirus infections in an unusual season in Bayern

Since January 2010 are piling up again in Bavaria Human diseases caused by hantaviruses transmitted by mice. In the first 13 weeks of 2010 were, according to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL), 36 [cases] reported [with the] hantavirus disease.

The numbers of cases is unusual high for the season and significantly exceeds the number of the same period the previous record year of 2007 reported cases (n = 17) of hantavirus disease.

This trend of an increased number of cases could continue in the coming months. For this reason here to be reminded of the specific recommendations for prevention of work with respect to Hantavirus and other forest workers in forest professionals.

Human hantavirus cases in the year 2010
Since the beginning of this year reported increased hantavirus infections, which is unusual for this time of year. During the first 13 weeks of the years 2004 to 2009 an average of 56 infections in Germany, the Robert Koch Institute were received during the same period in 2010 already 253 (Source: RKI, Stand: 13.04.2010).

In Bavaria it accounts for 36 hantavirus infections (as of 08/04/2010, LGL), with emphasis on those counties Freyung-Grafenau, W?rzburg and the Main-Spessart are involved (Fig. 2 and 3). These three counties are already for several years known as sites, occur more frequently where hantavirus infections.
