Bird flu: thousands of turkeys have to be killed

It is currently the first case of bird flu in a stock in NRW province. So far this year, only wild birds were affected by the virus. The Soester distrcit veterinairian ordered the killing of the stable animals. A total of 7,600 turkeys and 14,000 turkey poults have to be culled. The NRW province Ministry of the Environment confirmed the outbreak.

100,000 animals in the restricted area affected
A restricted area of three kilometers and an observation area of ten kilometers have been set up around the affected farm. In this area, there are a total of 35 holdings with around 100,000 poultry poultry, in the observation area 363 holdings with 500,000 poultry.
The affected farm is situated within a district in which all poultry must remain in the stables for a long time in order to prevent spread of the disease. How the virus got into the stables now needs to be investigated.

The owner informs the veterinarian
The owner of the turkey farm had informed his vet on Friday (16.12.2016) about ten deaths among his turkeys. A rapid test for avian influenza (avian influenza) was positive. An investigation by the Friedrich-L?ffler-Institute confirmed the high-infected virus variant N8 on Saturday (17.12.2016).

Poultry culled in Germany after bird flu found on two farms

About 30,000 turkeys and ducks were culled in Germany over the weekend after bird flu was found on two farms, authorities said on Monday.

Some 21,600 turkeys were culled on a farm in Soest in North Rhine Westfalia and 9,500 ducks were culled on a farm in Moeser in Saxony-Anhalt after the virulent H5N8 bird flu strain was discovered on both farms, regional authorities said.

The contagious H5N8 strain has been found in about 540 wild birds in Germany in recent weeks but few cases were found on farms as the crucial Christmas season for poultry sales starts.
