A six year-old girl from Hamburg should have died on the week-end as a result of an EHEC illness. Supposedly it concerns an isolated case, however, her elementary school reacted anxiously.

A speaker of the health authorities of the Hanseatic town confirmed to the news agency DPA on Sunday evening a case of illness with the cause. According to the information the newspaper "Die Welt" on Monday the child died on the night of Sunday. The first grader has shown since beginning of the last week symptoms of an infection with the aggressive food germ, said the leader of an elementary school in Hamburg-Blankenese on Sunday. It has been treated in a hospital.

Obvious it acts around an isolated case ? concerns an isolated case ?, stressed the authority speaker. ? It is not to be compared at all to the situation last year. ? With the biggest known EHEC outbreak in Germany in early summer, 2011 53 people had died all over the country. At that time North Germany was especially concerned. As a spring of the infections imported fenugreek seeds were identified from Egypt. In the sphere of the child in Hamburg there has been no other infection, explained the speaker. Tests have been pulled by the food which the girl has eaten. ? We hope that there are results in the course of Monday. ?

Child dies as killer bacteria EHEC returns to Germany

Hamburg - A 6-year old girl has died in Germany of the killer E.coli bacteria EHEC, prompting fears Monday that the epidemic has returned, after claiming dozens of victims last year.

Last year's bout was finally blamed on Fenugreek sprouts grown in Germany from Egyptian seeds - after causing a trade row with Spain, whose exports were initially thought to be the cause.

Hamburg state health officials said they had seized food samples from the child's home, after she died at the weekend, and from stores where the family shopped and were testing them. They said the rest of the family remained healthy.

Officials said EHEC was a constant threat, with 800 to 1,200 people being infected annually in Germany. Last year 53 died in Germany, as the sprouts sent the death rate spiking, but there had been a small number of deaths in other years, they said.

Germany - New EHEC/Ecoli outbreak in Hamburg

29 februari 2012

After the death of a 6-year-old girl in Hamburg, new EHEC (STEC) cases are reported from Germany.

Earlier this week 2 children, brother (11) and sister (3) were found to be positive. The boy went to a school next to the school of the diseased girl.

The school is closed for 2 days because of disinfection.

Today lab tests confirmed 2 more cases in Hamburg: two elderly women (68 and 88).

This is not a renewed outbreak of the strain which circulated last year (O104:H4). It is another strain: O157 according to Ärtze Zeitung. This probably could be O157:H7.

Vier weitere EHEC-Fälle in Hamburg

Earliest EHEC source remains unknown

The source of the earliest EHEC infection in the German Hamburg probably will remain unknown. The EHEC type concerned hasn't been found in any food. This was reported by a spokesperson of the health authorities in Hamburg, say various German media. Various laboratory analysis' were done. Only in one case, in cheese based on raw milk, was the EHEC bacteria found, but this wasn't the type as in the most recent EHEC outbreak.

In mid February a 6 year old girl died due to a EHEC infection. After that 4 more people (2 children aged 11 and 3 and 2 women aged 68 and 88) in Hamburg fell ill after being infected with the intestinal bacteria. Since then there have been no new cases reported in Hamburg. The child that died had EHEC serotype O157. During the big EHEC outbreak that killed 53 people in Germany it was the EHEC type O104.
