The bird flu has probably the mysterious bird deaths in several lakes at Pl?n triggered with more than 100 dead animals.
The staff responsible for animal diseases Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) was detected at night pathogen subtype H5N8, said the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of the Environment on Tuesday in Kiel. However, the FLI investigations are still ongoing.
"We are currently analyzing whether the virus is of the high or low pathogen type (strong or low pathogenic)," the ministry said. It was only when these results of the investigation were available that it was possible to say what measures had to be taken. Previously, the network had NDR 1 Welle Nord reports, the virus H5N8 had been detected in dead birds.
The results of the FLI will be available in the afternoon. The results will be communicated by Environment and Agriculture Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) in a press conference (1600 hours) in the Ministry of Kiel.
First, NDR 1 wave north had reported on the detected bird flu pathogen H5N8. Since the weekend, now had more than 150 dead waterfowl - especially tufted ducks - at the GreatPlon Lake and been found to surrounding smaller lakes, the station reported. According to the Ministry of the Environment, these are mainly well-fed herons. However, other species such as coot, swan, goose and gull are affected.
"Whose dead waterfowls are striking, should turn to the appropriate office," the ministry advised on Monday. The animals should not be accepted.
According to data from NDR 1 Welle Nord, employees of the city of Pl?n are currently seeking protection from the lakes at Pl?n in dead birds.
In recent years there have also been several cases of H5N8 bird flu in Germany. So far, according to the FLI on the Baltic Sea island of Riems, no case is known in which H5N8 was transferred to humans. Nevertheless, a human receptivity can not be completely excluded.

[h=3]Highly pathogenic avian influenza of type H5N8 in wild birds in Schleswig-Holstein[/h]
08/11/2016 Press Releases

Check biosafety measures in poultry holdings

Riems, 08 November 2016. - The Friedrich Loeffler Institute ( FLI ) confirmed the infection of wild birds with highly pathogenic avian influenza (avian influenza) subtype H5N8 in Plon, Schleswig-Holstein. Further suspicious cases from Schleswig-Holstein and Baden-W?rttemberg (Lake Constance) are currently under investigation. In recent days these viruses have already been detected in domestic poultry (turkeys) in Hungary and wild waterfowls in Hungary (Huckshwan), Croatia and Poland (M?we, Ente) near the border to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The FLI advises to increased attention and strongly recommends to review the biosecurity measures in poultry farms and to optimize if necessary. In particular, contact between wild birds and poultry should be prevented. This also applies to bird watching in zoos.

In the case of dead herons found at the Pl?ner lake in Schleswig-Holstein, the competent national investigation laboratory initially determined the suspicion of avian influenza. For clarification of the National Reference Laboratory for avian influenza received at FLIcorresponding samples. In three samples highly pathogenic avian influenza of subtype H5N8 was confirmed today.Further studies of dead found wild birds in Schleswig-Holstein and Baden-W?rttemberg are currently being carried out.

On the Swiss and Austrian side of Lake Constance, suspicious cases are also investigated in dead wild birds. (please see note below s.s.)
