In Nürnberg there is a suspicion on bird flu. National public health authorities fear that two dead swans could have been infected with the dangerous virus H5N1, communicated the city on Friday.

The kadaver was already found on past tuesday at a lake in the city. They were sent for more exact investigation to the laboratory of the Friedrich of Löffler institute on the Baltic Sea island Riems.

The lake is searched further regularly for dead water birds. The city did not impose a restricted area for the time being.

Germany has had more H5N1 positives in wild birds than any country in western Europe, and most of the positives have been in mute swans.

Any more coverage in German newspapers? Dead swans usually attract significant attention, which is one of the reasons most H5N1 detected in wild birds is in swans

The issue in Europe is detection, not spread. H5N1 is widespread, but only detected when infected hosts die. Thus, bad weather can create stress, higher levels of H5N1, and death (followed by detection).

Western Europe has NEVER reported H5N1 in a live wild bird, even at the height of the detection outbreaks in Feb / March, 2006 (and most detection was in wild birds).

Stress can also be due to bacterial infections. Getting H5N1 up to detectable levels can be linked to multiple causes.

Bottom line is without an increase in H5N1 levels, FALSE negatives rule in wild bird tests (in western Europe, Africa, North America, and more).

OK, please allow me to pose a question/hypothesis.

Is it possible that H5N1's very prolific ability to evolve may have prevented it from "going pandemic" up to this point?

Looking at Dr. Niman's comments regarding the Clade 1 Thai strain that is the culprit when H5N1 is found via the smuggling of birds into Europe, versus the Clade 2.2 strain (Qinghai) that is clearly and (I believe) indisputably transmitted by migratory wildfowl -- is it feasible that H5N1's inability to stay in a more uniform mode is actually working against it -- and thereby working for us?

Has anyone ever done research with previous pandemic strains to see what steps it took in its evolution? For example, could the 1918 virus have recombined with itself in the trenches of Europe and become lethal because, say, Clade 1 Kansas recombined with Clade 2 Paris, or something similar to that?

We know H2N2 and H3N2 were reassortants, but H1H1 from 1918 was a direct-to-human-from-bird flu, so reassortment with a human strain was unlikely. And we've got three strains of H5N1 circulating across the globe, simultaneously.

Or are we looking at the slow formation of a "perfect storm" of H5N1, if/when these three strains get together and play King of the Mountain and collectively decide which strain will dominate? And what continent will they gather over, based on computer projections and our own gut?

BERLIN: Authorities posted caution signs around two Bavarian lakes on Saturday after seven dead birds tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus, the first cases reported in Germany this year.

Nürnberg city authorities warned people to keep their dogs leashed and stay away from waterfowl after five swans, one duck and one goose all tested positive for H5N1.

The Consumer Affairs Ministry confirmed these as the first bird flu cases reported in Germany this year, and said the results of further tests were expected within a few days.

The additional tests were being done by the Friedrich-Loeffler Institut, which has dealt with most of Germany's previous H5N1 cases.

Last year, 13 EU nations were hit by bird flu — Austria, Denmark, Poland, Italy, Greece, Britain, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Hungary and France.

Bird flu was reported earlier this month in the Czech Republic and also surfaced elsewhere in the European Union earlier this year.

It is believed to spread along bird migration routes. The H5N1 strain has decimated poultry stocks since 2003 and killed at least 191 people worldwide, most of them directly infected by sick birds in Asia. The problem is with Qinghai H5N1, which is higher in throat swabs (usually cloacal swabs are collected).

In the recent PNAS report from China, only one of 414 HA sequences was Qinghai. Detection takes some effort, or something to cause the levels to rise. When birds die, the levels are high enough for detection. When alive the H5N1 speads below the radar, and now, in the summer, it is spilling over into dead wild birds in Germany, dead poultry in the Czech Republic (as well as poultry in Ghana and Togo), and patients in Egypt.

The surveillance program is a farce, used to keep the general public "controled", so they don't panic.

H5N1 doesn't read press releases. It is evolving and spreading, as Ilaria Capua declares wild birds free from H5N1 infections (on Wednesday at bthe Options VI flu conference). The foxes are guarding the hen houses, and the "surprises" just keep on coming.

H5N1 in the summer in the heart of western Europe is just one of many surprises (which were glaringly obvious based on the presentations in Toronto).

Does it mean we will see this turn up on the major lakes (Geneva,Constanz,Como,etc.) in Europe again?
Takes on a quite different setting in the summer time..just imagine all the leisure activities on and around water!
