Avian influenza suspected at turkey farm in Damme

In Damme in the district of Vechta there is the suspicion of the outbreak of avian influenza. In a turkey farm, about 20 animals died on Tuesday and another 60 on Wednesday. A total of 8,500 turkeys are fattened in the holding. Currently, the Land Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (Laves) in Oldenburg is investigating whether the animals were infected with the high-infected H5N8 virus.

The Veterinary Office has already taken initial safeguards and has set up a restricted area around the affected holding within a radius of one kilometer. There are 14 farms with about 75,000 poultry. These are examined for a possible spread of the pathogen. A result of the investigations is expected for today.

Bird flu outbreak in turkeys in Damme

After the discovery of a new avian influenza in a turkey farm in Damme (Kreis Vechta) 8000 animals have to be culled. The Minister of Agriculture of Lower Saxony, Christian Meyer (Greens), said on Wednesday at the start of the Landtag meeting in Hanover.

Hannover. In a private laboratory, the H5 pathogen was identified. This was confirmed in the night of Wednesday by the Department of Consumer Protection and Food Safety. The type that is involved, whether it is the highly pathogenic H5N8, has yet to be investigated. "How the pathogen came into the stable is unclear," said Meyer.

A restricted area and an observation area had been set up around the site. It is the second official suspicion in an animal husbandry in Lower Saxony. In addition, there were ten confirmed evidence of H5N8 in wild birds.

Avian influenza in turkey farm in Damme

In a turkey mast farm in Damme in the district of Vechta, the suspicion of avian influenza has been confirmed. According to the county, the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut has established that the approximately 80 dead animals were infected with the virus H5N8. All 8,500 turkeys must now be killed as a precaution.
75,000 animals in the restricted area.

A one-kilometer-wide barrier district was set up for operation. Poultry, eggs and poultry food may neither be imported nor exported. 14 Poultry farms and hobby keepers with around 75,000 poultry are affected by the ban, according to the county. How the pathogen was able to get into the stable in Damme, despite the need for stabling, is still unclear.
