Cases of monkeypox were first identified in Germany in May 2022. As of July 7th, 2022, 1385 cases of monkeypox from all 16 federal states have been transmitted to the RKI. These cases are related to other monkeypox cases that have been reported in various countries outside Africa since May 2022. What is special about these cases is that those affected had not traveled to African countries where the virus is endemic (West and Central Africa), as they had in the past, and that many transmissions apparently took place in the context of sexual activities (currently especially in men who have had sexual contact with other men). As far as is known, most of those affected do not become seriously ill. Further cases are to be expected in Germany. According to current knowledge, close contact is required for transmission of the pathogen. It still seems possible to limit the current outbreak in Germany if infections are recognized in good time and precautionary measures implemented. Information on symptoms, transmission routes and protection options (including the possibility of vaccination) are therefore essential. Physicians should also include monkeypox in the extended differential diagnostic considerations in people with no known travel history to endemic areas (West and Central Africa) with unclear smallpox-like skin lesions (in differentiation from chickenpox , etc. ) or lesions.
According to current knowledge, the RKI assesses the risk to the health of the general population in Germany as low. The RKI continues to monitor the situation very closely and adjusts its assessment to the current state of knowledge.
At www.rki.de/affenpocken , the RKI provides various recommendations, including a guide for doctors on suspected clarification and measures to be taken in the case of monkeypox ( flow chart ), recommendations on how to deal with infected people and contact persons , and information on diagnostics and therapy.
