Germany finds more African swine fever in wild boar, cases reach 480
1/8/2021

HAMBURG, Jan 8 (Reuters) - The number of African swine fever (ASF) cases found in wild boar in Germany has now reached 480, Germany’s agriculture ministry said on Friday, continuing an outbreak of the disease among wild animals which halted German pork exports to Asia.

The cases have occurred since the first outbreak in September 2020 and were in eastern state of Brandenburg and Saxony around the areas of previous discoveries, the ministry said. But a new case in a wild boar is suspected in the Potsdam region near Berlin, the ministry added. No farm pigs affected...

ASF alarm in Potsdam and Berlin: ASF suspected case at the city limits

January 8th, 2021 -

There is a suspected case of ASF on the city limits of Berlin. A new exclusion zone in a densely populated area threatens.

The Berlin - Brandenburg state laboratory has reported a suspected case of African swine fever ( ASF ) directly on the border with Berlin. An animal carcass was found in Gro? Glienicke that is suspected to have died of African swine fever. The case is still being examined.

As the Brandenburg Ministry of Health announced on Friday (8 January), the animal carcass will be brought to the National Reference Laboratory at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute ( FLI ) for further clarification.

The Berlin authorities are apparently also startled, because the site is said to be on the border with the Spandau district. The district of Gro? Glienicke is located west of Berlin directly on the former inner-German border. The Berlin city limits are only 200 meters away, and Berlin's Grunewald is also in the immediate vicinity. A press conference was announced at short notice for Friday noon.

African swine fever: all-clear for suspected case in Potsdam

The suspicion of African swine fever ( ASF ) in a wild boar carcass find in Potsdam Gro? Glienicke was not confirmed by the National Reference Laboratory. The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (Federal Research Institute for Animal Health) was able to rule out African swine fever through extensive, additional examinations of the wild boar carcass sent.

State Secretary for Consumers Anna Heyer-Stuffer, Head of the ASP Crisis Unit : “I am very happy and relieved about this result! I would like to thank the animal disease control service of the state of Brandenburg for their quick and professional action. I would also like to thank the city of Berlin, the state capital Potsdam and the surrounding districts, who have made all the necessary preparations within a very short time and thus showed that everyone is prepared for an emergency. Because one thing is clear: African swine fever can also be carried over long distances by humans. We must therefore continue to be very vigilant to prevent the virus from spreading from areas infected with African swine fever. "
