German study: no proof of human infections caused by Schmallenberg virus

The German Robert Koch Institute today published test results of bloodsamples from farmers who dealt with infected animals.

After testing the blood of 60 sheepholders and 1 cattle holder, no antibodies against the Schmallenberg virus were found. The people who were tested all have had frequent contact with infected animals.

Some farmers complained of fever or other general symptoms. They were tested once more via PCR. All results were negative.

These testresults indicate the risque of human infections caused by the Schmallenbergvirus is very small.

Um zu kl?ren, ob das Schmallenberg-Virus nicht nur bestimmte Paarhufer, sondern auch Menschen infiziert, hat das Robert Koch-Institut entsprechende Labortests entwickelt und eine Studie bei Sch?fern durchgef?hrt. ?Die Ergebnisse der RKI-Studie zeigen, dass das neue Virus bei Menschen mit viel Erregerkontakt nicht zu einer Infektion gef?hrt hat?, sagt Reinhard Burger, Pr?sident des Robert Koch-Instituts. Das Robert Koch-Institut ist das nationale Public-Health-Institut Deutschlands, mit Public Health wird die Gesundheit der Bev?lkerung bezeichnet. ?Im Hinblick auf das Erkennen neuer gesundheitlicher Risiken nimmt das RKI eine zentrale ?Antennenfunktion? im Sinne eines Fr?hwarnsystems wahr?, unterstreicht Burger.

Das Robert Koch-Institut f?hrte daher als Vorsichtsma?nahme die Studie bei Sch?fern durch, da diese am meisten Kontakt mit dem neuen Erreger haben. Am 29.02.2012 befragten die RKI-Wissenschaftler in Nordrhein-Westfalen am Rande einer Informationsveranstaltung 60 Schafhalter und einen Rinderhalter und entnahmen ihnen Blut f?r die Laboruntersuchung.

Die Befragungen ergaben keine Verdachtsmomente, dass im Zusammenhang mit Kontakt zu infizierten Tieren auff?llige Erkrankungssymptome aufgetreten w?ren. Bei den Blutuntersuchungen fanden die RKI-Forscher keine Antik?rper gegen das Schmallenberg-Virus im Blut. Solche Antik?rper w?ren ein Beleg f?r eine Infektion mit dem Virus gewesen. Bei einigen Tierhaltern mit unspezifischen Symptomen, wie Fieber oder Kopfschmerzen, war auch ein sogenannter PCR-Test negativ, mit dem man Viren direkt nachweisen kann.

In der Studie ist eine vergleichsweise hohe Zahl von Menschen mit intensivem Kontakt zu dem Erreger untersucht worden. Sehr seltene Infektionsereignisse k?nnen aber mit einer solchen Studie nicht erfasst werden. Auf der Basis der Studienergebnisse und der genetischen Eigenschaften des neuen Virus kann das Risiko von Infektionen beim Menschen als ?u?erst gering eingesch?tzt werden.

EFSA and EU Member States work together to tackle Schmallenberg virus

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has today published its second report on the Schmallenberg virus (SBV). The virus that to date has been identified in eight EU Member States can affect domestic[1] and wild ruminants, leading in some cases to severe birth defects. Although uncertainties and gaps in data remain, today?s report importantly shows that when based on worst case scenario assumptions, the number of infected ruminants is low compared to the total number of these animals in each Member State.

Strong cooperation from Member States is reflected in the calibre of data collected according to guidance provided by EFSA which was published last month in response to an urgent request from the European Commission. The data collected by Member States have allowed the Authority to analyse the current geographical distribution and impact of the disease in the European Union.

Some caution nevertheless should be exerted when interpreting the data as underreporting or lack of diagnostic confirmation may affect the picture that we have today of the prevalence of the disease. Although all Member States have submitted detailed information about confirmed cases, only two also reported on suspected cases. Data recommendations stated in this report will be used to refine further data collection. To ensure that an - as accurate as possible - evolution of SBV is known, EFSA will publish periodical reports on the status and analysis of the data collected. Furthermore, EFSA will assess the overall impact of the SBV infection on animal health, animal production and animal welfare together with a characterisation of the pathogen by 31 May 2012.

The results of EFSA?s report are being shared at a scientific seminar held in Brussels today organised by the European Commission?s Health and Consumers Directorate General (DG SANCO) that aims to present the current state of play on the latest scientific information on SBV and the risk management approach taken by the EU.

There is currently no evidence that the Schmallenberg virus could cause illness in humans.
