Ten Swedes are severly ill and many more are suffering other effects from a virulent enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) bacteria following the recent outbreak of the disease in Northern Germany.

According to Sofie Ivarsson, epidemiologist at the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control (Smitskyddsinstitutet), it is the complication haemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) that causes patients serious trouble...

There are still a large number of EHEC cases in Sweden, with 15 new cases reported on Friday.

According to Sofie Ivarsson, epidemiologist at the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet), more cases are being reported and the number of Swedish sufferers keeps changing.

?The infection is now spread all over the country. But no one has actually caught the infection in Sweden,? Ivarsson said to TT.

Health officials say 32 confirmed EHEC cases in Denmark, Sweden

Copenhagen/Stockholm - Health officials in Denmark and Sweden reported Friday a total of 32 confirmed cases of people afflicted by the EHEC bacterium, all of whom had previously been travelling in Germany.

Officials in Copenhagen said that additionally, the EHEC bacterium was found in Spanish cucumbers in two supermarkets.

Merchants were ordered to immediately withdraw all their products imported from the producers involved.

No new EHEC-infected Swedes

So far, 25 Swedes were infected with EHEC after the large outbreak in Germany. The outbreak started in late April and the number fell ill with HUS in Germany has now risen to 276, of whom two have died.

In Sweden, a dozen of the infected developed HUS, hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can damage the kidneys severely.

- In the current situation, we have the same number as yesterday, but it can obviously be changed. We are following developments closely, but we do think there will be no significant increase, "said Antonio Barragan, Chief of Infectious Disease Control.

Six new EHEC cases reported in Sweden

Six more Swedes have been infected by the virulent enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) bacteria stemming from an E. coli outbreak which originated in northern Germany, bringing the total number of cases in Sweden to 36.

The Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control (Smitskyddsinstitutet ? SMI) believes that all cases of the diseases reported so far in Sweden originated in Germany and there are no indications thus far that the disease is spreading within Sweden.

Number of confirmed E.Coli cases rises to 11 in Denmark

COPENHAGEN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed E.coli cases has risen to 11 with at least another eight persons suspected of having the intestinal infection in Denmark, according to Denmark's National Serum Institute on Sunday.

Five of the confirmed cases show symptoms of kidney failure which marks an advanced stage of the sickness, the institute said.

Woman in critical condition in EHEC case

A Swedish woman is reported to be in critical condition after being infected with the virulent enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) bacteria stemming from an E. coli outbreak which originated in northern Germany.

Doctors in Halland in western Sweden are unable to concrete prognosis for the woman who is reported to be suffering from kidney problems and is being treated with a dialysis and respirator.
