Georgia reports 1st flu death

Georgia has its first death from the novel influenza A H1N1 virus, health officials announced this afternoon.

A 43-year-old Cobb County woman with underlying health problems died from the new virus, said Rhonda Medows, Commissioner of the Department of Community Health and Acting Public Health Director.

There was no other information about the patient in the news release from the state.

There have been 211 deaths in the United States as of 11 a.m. today, not including the new Georgia death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There have been 37,246 confirmed cases in the U.S., including 138 in Georgia and 176 in South Carolina, according to the CDC.

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Community Health confirms a 43-year-old female from Cobb County as the first H1N1 related death in Georgia.

DCH Commissioner and Acting Public Health Director Dr. Rhonda Medows said the victim suffered from underlying health conditions when she became infected with the novel H1N1 virus.

"Although most of the individuals who have contracted the novel H1N1 virus so far, have had mild to moderate symptoms, this viral illness has claimed 170 lives in other states throughout the country," she said.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Secretary reports that 37,000 deaths are caused each year due to non-H1N1 seasonal flu.

The majority of individuals infected with the novel virus experience mild to moderate symptoms and recover from their illness without complications. Symptoms of the virus are similar to seasonal influenza and include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, body aches, extreme fatigue, and possible nausea and vomiting, especially in children.

As of July 8, 2009, Georgia had confirmed 143 cases of novel H1N1.
