Mild flu season still packing a punch in Georgia

Hospitals across the state are seeing an uptick in flu cases, and public health officials say the illness has now become widespread in Georgia.
Yet compared with past flu seasons, this one appears relatively mild. And it?s spiking much later than those of previous years.

Nydam said that at this point last year, there had been 1,223 flu-related hospitalizations in metro Atlanta. There have been 256 this year.
And at this time last year, Public Health had reported 27 flu-related deaths statewide. This year the death toll is five, with two coming during the week of March 6.

 RSV Viral Surveillance: Of the 365 specimens tested and reported by the
Georgia Public Health Laboratory (GPHL) and the National Respiratory and Enteric
Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories during week 13, the

Synopsis
During week 15 there was low influenza activity in Georgia with sporadic
occurrences of sustained flu transmission.
 Outpatient Illness Surveillance (ILINet): The proportion of outpatient
visits for ILI was 2.19%, which is above the Georgia baseline of 1.6%.
 Geographic Spread of Influenza: The geographic spread of influenza in
Georgia was SPORADIC during week 15.
 Metro Area Hospitalizations: There were 10 hospitalizations due to influenza
infection during week 15. There have been 527 hospitalizations due to
influenza infection so far this season.
 Influenza Related Deaths: There were 0 confirmed deaths due to influenza.
There have been 5 confirmed influenza-associated death as of 4/22/2016.
 Viral Surveillance: Of the 600 specimens tested by Georgia clinical laboratories
reporting to the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance
System (NREVSS) during week 15, 56 (9.33%) were positive for influenza.
Public Health Laboratories tested 17 specimens during week 15, 6 were positive
for influenza.
