Health Dept confirms first flu-related death

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed that a woman in Southwest Georgia is the first person in the state to die from the flu this season.

Officials did not release the woman's name.

The Department of Public Health said they have seen a large increase in flu cases this week in Southwest Georgia...

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - The Georgia Dept. of Public Health has confirmed two flu-related deaths in the Coastal Health District, one in Chatham County and one in Effingham County. Both deaths involved elderly females.

These are the first confirmed flu-related deaths in the Coastal Health District, however there have been five additional flue-related deaths statewide...

Georgia Weekly Influenza Report During week 01 there was regional influenza activity in Georgia with high occurrences of sustained flu transmission.

 Outpatient Illness Surveillance (ILINet): The proportion of outpatient visits for ILI was 3.41%, which is above the Georgia baseline of 2.1%.
 Geographic Spread of Influenza: The geographic spread of influenza in Georgia was REGIONAL during week 01.
 Metro Area Hospitalizations: There were 23 hospitalizations due to influenza infection during week 01.There have been 917 hospitalizations due to influenza infection so far this season
 Influenza Related Deaths: There were 3 confirmed influenza-associated deaths during week 01. There have been 20 confirmed influenza-associated deaths as of 1/16/2015.
 Viral Surveillance: Of the 1,162 Specimens tested and reported by the Georgia Public Health Laboratory (GPHL) and the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories during week 01, 149 (12.82%) were positive for influenza.
 Reported Influenza Outbreaks: There was 1 influenza-related outbreak during week 01 and 2 influenza-associated outbreaks during week 02. There have been 29 influenza-related outbreaks so far this season.
 RSV Viral Surveillance: Of the 344 specimens tested and reported by the Georgia Public Health Laboratory (GPHL) and the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories during week 53, the percent positive of ALL laboratory confirmed tests was 19.48%.

during week 20. There have been 1,460 hospitalizations due to influenza infection so far this
season
 Influenza Related Deaths: There were 0 confirmed influenza-associated death during week
20. There have been 28 confirmed influenza-associated deaths as of 5/29/2015.
 Reported Influenza Outbreaks: There were 0 influenza-associated outbreaks during week
20. There have been 34 influenza-related outbreaks so far this season.
 Viral Surveillance: Of the 312 Specimens tested and reported by the Georgia Public Health
Laboratory (GPHL) and the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System
(NREVSS) collaborating laboratories during week 20, 9 (2.88%) were positive for influenza.
 RSV Viral Surveillance: Of the 219 specimens tested and reported by the Georgia Public
Health Laboratory (GPHL) and the National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System
(NREVSS) collaborating laboratories during week 20, the percent positive of ALL laboratory
confirmed tests was 3.20%.
