By Misty Williams

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The number of flu-related deaths in Georgia climbed to five last month, up from one reported death in November, new data shows.

Overall, the Southeast has been hit significantly harder than most areas of the country, with widespread flu activity reported in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Virginia, as well as New York, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

However, flu is unpredictable so that could change, said Tom Skinner, a CDC spokesman.

Re: Georgia 2010-2011 Season: Weeks 40-4 (One New Pediatric Death, Total Deaths 10)

Week 4: Regional, high activity
1 new pediatric death (3 total); total deaths 10
27 new hospitalizations; total 254

ILI: 4.28% (slightly above baseline)
Decrease in hospitalizations
http://health.state.ga.us/epi/flu/fluupd10.asp

There was a significant decrease in Flu B, resulting in an overall drop in positive cases and %ILI. The number of positives for pH1N1 and H3N2 were similar to last week. I can't tell from the report how many samples were tested and whether the overall drop in positive cases was due to fewer samples being collected or a lower percent positive.

Week 4 GA Isolates.png

There was a shift in the demographics from the previous week, with higher ILI visits reported in 0-5 yrs and 5-24 yrs, and lower visits in each of the remaining age groups.
