May 19 (Bloomberg) -- Avian flu killed wild birds on Genggahu Lake in central China, veterinary officials said, in an outbreak reminiscent of bird deaths in 2005 that heralded the virus’s spread to Europe.

Birds began dying in the province of Qinghai from the H5N1 avian influenza strain on May 8, Zhang Zhongqui, deputy director general of China’s Animal Disease Control Centre in Beijing, said in a May 17 report to the World Organization for Animal Health. Zhang said 121 birds died and 600 more are susceptible to the infection, the first recorded outbreak since June 2006.

The H5N1 virus, which has killed 261 of the 424 people known to have been infected, spread to Europe and the Middle East from late 2005. Some scientists said the strain was almost identical to a variant found at China’s Qinghai Lake, where more than 6,000 wild birds died in April 2005.

The World Health Organization has said it’s concerned an outbreak of swine flu that has spread to 40 countries could become more lethal if that virus swaps genes with the H5N1 avian flu strain.

Gonghe County has confiscated 600 poultry and is disinfecting every farm to avoid infection, though no bird flu symptoms has been observed at any farm, a local government spokesman told Xinhua Tuesday.
In Tanggemu town, about 15 km from the lake, a team of medical workers, disease control specialists and policemen were keeping watch Tuesday morning to disinfect every passing vehicle. Vehiclesand personnel from outside Gonghe County were banned from entering.
Dukar, a farmer in town, said disease control authorities had taken away all chickens in his neighborhood.

XINING -- Northwest China's Qinghai Province is still on alarm Thursday, four days after an H5N1 avian flu outbreak was confirmed in one of its Tibetan counties, the local animal epidemic prevention authority said.

Altogether 121 migratory birds were found dead near the Genggahai Lake of Gonghe County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Hainan on May 8. They tested H5N1 positive at China's National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory on Sunday.

As of Wednesday, the number of dead birds had climbed to 200, the provincial animal epidemic prevention and treatment department said in a press release.

It said Gonghe County had killed 21,000 poultry and vaccinated another 23,000 to avoid infection, though no signs of bird flu had been observed on any farm so far.

The epidemic area has been sealed off as of Sunday. Four temporary checkpoints were set up on roads leading to the area to disinfect every passing vehicle and allow only epidemic prevention workers to enter.

Gonghe County, with 133 hectares of wetland, is a major stopping-off point for migratory birds.

Bird flu outbreak reported in Qinghai

(TibetanReview.net, May 21, 2009) — There has been an outbreak of the H5N1 avian flu among migratory birds near the Genggahai Lake of Gonghe (Tibetan: Chabcha) County in Hainan (Tibetan: Tsolho) Prefecture of Qinghai Province, with 121 of them found dead there on May 8, reported China’s official Xinhua May 19. It said the County had confiscated 600 poultry and was disinfecting every farm to avoid infection.

The report said at least 1,000 other migratory birds were still seen in the wetland of Gonghe County May 19.

That was a difficult question, pfewwww! Just spent about 2 hours on it, and still I am not sure I am right.

Wulanchabu college is located at 41.020157 north, 113.137722 east (decimal degrees). Found it on Google maps. Its the capital of the potatoes...

The Wahid notice is near Qinghai Lake at 36.6 north, 99.10 east (decimal degrees). The outbreak is east and slightly south of the lake.

Both locations are at a distance of 1313 kilometers from one another.

I've managed to make a map but, as I said, don't take it for accurate, I really am not sure.
