<!-- --> A school-age child has died in Genesee County of a confirmed case of H1N1 influenza, the county's interim health director said today.
The announcement by Randolph P. Garney did not identify the child's age, residence, school district or when and where the student died.
"The Genesee County Health Department is announcing the death of a school-age child with confirmed H1N1 influenza," Garney said in a news release. "To protect the identity of the family, the [department] is not releasing any identifying information about the child."
The news of the Genesee County child's death comes just two days after a 15-year-old Amherst High School student died of pneumonia.
Tests are being conducted to determine whether Chelsea Oliver, the Amherst student, had the H1N1 virus. Chelsea was admitted to Women & Children's Hospital on Oct. 25 and died on Sunday.
Two Buffalo students died of the H1N1 flu virus in June. Nationally, 292 laboratory-confirmed H1N1 deaths occurred between August and Oct. 10, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Genesee County Interim Public Health Director Randy Garney says the child died approximately a week and a half ago, and autopsy results from Albany have confirmed that swine flu was a contributing factor.

Health officials have not released the name, age, or town of the child, nor whether the child suffered from any underlying medical conditions due to HIPAA regulations.

<!--[include_if_component:movie-file:1:incs/story/movie.inc]-->UPDATE: 2:52 P.M.

The Genesee County Health Department has announced the death of a school age child with confirmed H1N1 influenza.

The death was announced Tuesday morning. To protect the privacy of the family, the Health Department did not release any identifying information about the child.

Interim Genesee County Health Director Randy Garney, when contacted Tuesday afternoon, did not release the child's name but responded ??yes?? when asked if the child died almost two weeks ago.

Jared Peters, a fifth-grader at Pembroke Intermediate School, died Oct. 22 at Women and Children's Hospital in Buffalo.

Genesee County has begun receiving H1N1 vaccine and will continue to schedule clinics as sufficient supplies are available. The local media will be used to convey clinic information to the community along with the Health Department Website at www.co.genesee.ny/dpt/publichealth.

Groups recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to receive the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine include:

-- Pregnant women.

-- Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age.

-- Health care and emergency medical services personnel.

-- All people from 6 months through 24 years of age.

-- Persons aged 25 through 64 years who have health conditions associated with higher risk of medical complications from influenza.

The Genesee County Health Department advises residents to practice these strategies to decrease the spread of H1N1 in our community:

-- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it and then wash your hands.

-- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleansers are also effective.

-- Avoid people who are ill.

-- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth since germs can spread that way.

-- If you have influenza-like illness (fever of more than 100 degrees F with cough or sore throat) stay at home for at least 24 hours after your fever goes away, without using any fever-reducing medications such as acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol) or ibuprofen (e.g. Motrin, Advil).

-- Clean shared space more often such as phone receivers, keyboards, steering wheels and office equipment.

The Genesee County Health Department can be reached at (585) 344-2580 ext. 5000.
