On 24 January 2022, a case of yellow fever tested positive by seroneutralization at the Institut Pasteur in Dakar. The patient was a 42-year-old male from the Ogooué Maritime province in Gabon. He was reportedly not vaccinated against yellow fever. He presented with jaundice on 17 September 2021 and died on 23 September 2021 in Port Gentil. Two other probable cases have been recorded, as of 7 May 2022.

Gabon: strategy for the elimination of yellow fever epidemics presented to the Minister of Health

The Minister of Health, Dr. Guy-Patrick Obiang Ndong discussed, on Monday July 4, with the representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). . The objective of this meeting was to develop strategies to help eliminate yellow fever epidemics in Gabon.

It was within the framework of a joint WHO-UNICEF mission that Dr. Guy-Patrick Obiang met with his hosts. It was a question for the member of the government to inquire about the conclusions of the work carried out on the basis of the global strategy for the elimination of yellow fever epidemics (EYE) and this, with the assistance of the Institute of Epidemiology and for the fight against endemics (IELE).

To this end, the stakeholders scrutinized several points, including the revision of the 2018-2021 three-year plan, the basic strategy for the elimination of epidemics based on the mechanisms for mobilizing resources and technical assistance for support the country in the planning and implementation of a mass preventive campaign against yellow fever.

The member of the government took the opportunity to salute the contribution of UN organizations in improving the local health system. Also, Dr. Guy Patrick Obiang Ndong is committed to strengthening border surveillance. It should be noted that a case of yellow fever recorded in a country constitutes an epidemic according to the World Health Organization which has a vaccine listed in the International Health Regulations (IHR).
