ATLANTA -- Three people who were homeless have died in connection with a tuberculosis outbreak involving Atlanta shelters, reports Georgia Health News.

GHN reports the latest TB death occurred last week at Grady Memorial Hospital, according to Nancy Nydam, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Public Health.

The number of TB cases in 2014 involving homeless shelters in Fulton County has increased to 28, including two shelter volunteers, GHN said...

...The number of TB cases this year involving Fulton County homeless shelters, meanwhile, has increased to 28, including two shelter volunteers.

That's up from a total of 16 cases reported in May by the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness.

The Department of Public Health last week sent a letter to churches whose volunteers serve in homeless shelters, urging that the volunteers be screened for TB.

This TB strain is resistant to the drug isoniazid, but is curable with other anti-TB medications...

Atlanta confronts tuberculosis outbreak in homeless shelters

(Reuters) - Three homeless people in Atlanta have died of tuberculosis infections as Georgia public health officials work to contain an outbreak affecting shelters, state authorities said on Friday.

The outbreak has infected 47 people, including two volunteers, linked to four shelters in Atlanta's Fulton County, said Nancy Nydam, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Public Health.

An isolated case is also being monitored in Vance, Alabama, where health officials on Friday screened auto workers for the disease after an employee at a Mercedes-Benz plant tested positive...
