World leaders urged steps to make Covid-19 vaccines available in developing countries, and the Group of Seven members pledged $7.5 billion toward a World Health Organization initiative to get vaccinations to the poorest nations.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, noted that 75% of the vaccines distributed so far have gone to 10 wealthier countries. Vaccines, he said, “must be available and affordable for everyone, everywhere.”
Mr. Guterres said the wealthy economies that belong to the Group of 20 nations—including the U.S., European powers, China and India—are well placed to set up an emergency taskforce to at least double global manufacturing capacity, including through sharing of licenses and technology transfers.
