TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The government will utilize funds from its poverty eradication program to compensate for the daily cost of poultry breeders whose fowls were destroyed due to being infected by bird flu. ?They do not have to worry,? said Bayu Krisnamurti, Secretary of the Bird Flu National Commission, yesterday (11/9).
Compensation will be granted during 1-3 months before restocking. The amount will depend on an expert's calculation. The compensation will be given by the Department of Social Services that coordinates with the Department of People's Welfare. ?Its form will resemble the daily cost for disaster refugees,? said Bayu.
Up until now, of the 72 cases that were positively declared as infected with bird flu, 55 patients died. The average death (CFR???) is still above 70 percent because of the mishandling. In fact, Bayu said, bird flu medicine oseltamivir will only be effective 48 hours after the patients are infected.
However, Bayu said, handling time for patients is better. ?Earlier, patients were seen on an average of 5.7 days after they were infected. Now, the handling time is 5.3 days,? he said.

The government will strengthen security in breeding, households, transportation, fowl distribution, abattoirs, and markets. The Bird Flu National Commission has also set out three supporting steps: health services empowerment; breeding restructuring; and pandemic simulation.
