The Ministry of Health reports that a case of invasive meningococcal infection has been diagnosed in an adult resident of Bora Bora. Presenting signs suggestive of meningitis on August 31, the patient was initially treated by the Bora Bora Medical Center, then transferred to the French Polynesia Hospital Center (CHPF). His condition is progressing favorably.

As a precautionary measure, preventive treatment was administered to people who had close contact with the patient, in accordance with current health recommendations.

To date, no further cases have been reported, and health authorities are continuing their enhanced surveillance. This is the second case of invasive meningococcal disease reported in 2025.

As a reminder, meningococcus is a bacterium that is transmitted through the air, during close contact (coughing, sneezing, transfer of saliva and sputum). Invasive meningococcal infection can cause meningitis in 30 to 60% of cases and sepsis in 20 to 30% of cases. Although rare, the disease can progress rapidly and lead to serious complications if not treated in time. Symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, and severe fatigue. In cases of sepsis, these signs may be accompanied by a petechial or purpuric rash.

If symptoms occur, it is essential to consult a doctor without delay, especially for young children and vulnerable people. The teams of the Health Directorate (DS) and the Health and Social Action Regulatory Agency (ARASS) remain fully mobilized to ensure the prevention and management of this situation.
