Covid-19: 3 new deaths this weekend in Guyana

The ARS publishes the Covid figures for Saturday and Sunday this Monday morning. 313 new cases were detected. Three new deaths have been reported, bringing the total to 15 Coronavirus-related deaths since March 4.
As of March 4, 2020, 3,774 positive cases have been recorded in Guyana, including 1,352 patients healed (103 more healed this weekend).
15 more patients are hospitalized, bringing the number of people in this case to 120, to which must be added 27 people in intensive care. This Sunday, six patients were evacuated to Martinique and Guadeloupe.
Last week, a Covid report reported the number of deaths "in hospital". Does this mean that there are deaths outside hospitals? We posed the question to Prefect Marc del Grande: "It can happen that there are patients who die at home, this is a figure which is not by definition completely consolidated. Mortality observed in Guyana from March 1, 2020 to date is significantly down, which is an indicator to check that there are not many Covid deaths in the homes. It can happen that there are deaths indeed ... To my knowledge, there has been a death at home. But to my knowledge, I'm not the medical authority. "

Coronavirus: Guyana needs an additional "300 caregivers"

By Le Figaro with AFP
Posted 3 hours ago

Guyana needs additional 300 " caregivers " to cope with the accelerating coronavirus epidemic, Overseas Minister Annick Girardin told deputies on Tuesday, launching a new call for national solidarity.

" We do not have enough human resources today, it is more than 200 caregivers, even 300 caregivers that we need in Guyana ", declared the minister, answering during the questions to the government to the deputy LR Didier Quentin (Charente-Maritime), who questioned him on behalf of the member for Mayotte Mansour Kamardine on the situation in the Indian Ocean department and in Guyana, two territories still under state of health emergency.

1000 tests per day

According to Annick Girardin, " more than 100 people " have already arrived in Guyana. " We have 1000 tests per day, it is higher than the national average ", " we have more than 2 million masks, we have the equipment and the means ", but " we do not have enough human resources today 'hui , ' she added. " We have to be at this meeting ," insisted the minister, launching, as she has already done on several occasions, " a solemn and national appeal for solidarity ". The peak of the epidemic is expected " around mid-July-late July, " she warned.

Guyana surpassed the 4000 Covid-19 positive cases on Tuesday (4004, 313 in 24 hours), and has 127 hospitalizations, 20 in intensive care and 15 deaths. As for Mayotte, " things are better, " said the minister. " Since June 2, there has been no new resuscitation placement for respiratory distress ", and " only four people are in resuscitation ". And of the four criteria that led to Mayotte being kept in the orange zone, " a first is green, " said the minister, without specifying which one.

" We can have hope in Mayotte to get out of this crisis and get out of the state of emergency. This is what we will do by decree as soon as the prefect, the ARS and the elected representatives of the territory ask us to do so, ”she added. Mayotte counted Tuesday 2603 positive cases, 34 hospitalizations including 4 in intensive care, and 33 deaths.

Despite the trend, health authorities want to see positive results in the evolution of the disease progression curve:

While the total number of people infected in Guyana, since March 04, amounts to 5,054 patients including 1,984 cured, the Regional Health Agency, in its newsletter of the day (Covid-19 Letter Pro) observes that l The epidemic, which has accelerated over the past month, has nevertheless contained itself.

"All of the players are playing their part and doing quite well compared to what is seen in many countries. Fieldwork has effects. The wave comes but it arrives later and the slope is lower than what has been observed in several European countries. "

Pr Mathieu Nacher, director of the Antilles-Guyane clinical investigation center (CHC)

Doubling rate of cases

The case fatality rate, still low:

"It is less than in Marseille where Didier Raoult says he has the lowest mortality"

Pr Mathieu Nacher, Director of the Antilles-Guyane clinical investigation center (CHC)

According to Professor Mathieu Nacher, still interviewed in the ARS Pro Letter, with between three and four deaths per 1000 cases depending on the day, the Guyanese scores are not so bad, several factors could explain this result:

Guyana is not as far advanced in the epidemic and will still deplore deaths.
By testing more it mathematically lowers its fatality rate.
The population is younger.
Caregivers in Guyana benefit from the experience of their colleagues from the territories where the Covid struck earlier.

For the director of the Antilles-Guyane clinical investigation center:

"What we learned was quickly passed on to Guyana: anticoagulants, corticosteroids, how to ventilate patients. Resuscitation has been involved in the clinic. "
