The TBIP laboratory of the University of Guyana publishes a study reporting the first fatal case of canine visceral leishmaniasis in Guyana. This diagnosis, carried out in partnership with the MorphoVet veterinary clinic, highlights the need for increased vigilance to prevent the spread of this parasitic disease.
Visceral leishmaniasis is a serious parasitic disease caused by Leishmania infantum and transmitted by sandflies, insect vectors. This form of the disease is the most severe, as it is fatal without treatment. While visceral leishmaniasis does not occur naturally in French Guiana, it is common in some regions of South America, particularly Brazil. Dogs, which are often asymptomatic, play an important role as reservoirs of the parasite, complicating prevention efforts.
In 2023, a team from the TBIP laboratory, in collaboration with the MorphoVet veterinary clinic in Cayenne, diagnosed a case of visceral leishmaniasis in a dog imported from Brazil. The infection, caused by Leishmania infantum , led to the death of the animal before treatment could be administered. This case highlights the risk of importation of this disease into French Guiana, even in the absence of local sandflies capable of transmitting the parasite.
Although sandflies, the classic vectors of the disease, have not been identified in French Guiana, other modes of transmission are being considered. These possible routes include venereal, vertical (from mother to fetus) or transplacental transmission. These non-vectorial modes could allow limited spread of the parasite, requiring increased surveillance of animals introduced into the territory.
The TBIP laboratory is currently continuing its research to assess the presence of Leishmania infantum in dogs, whether sick or asymptomatic, in French Guiana. This work aims to better understand the risks of the disease establishing itself in the territory and to develop appropriate prevention strategies.

Abstract
Here we described a case of fatal canine visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in French Guiana, a non-endemic VL Amazonian area. The dog was a 2-year-old pug imported from Brazil to French Guiana. Initially seen for a pruriginous lesion on the muzzle which healed after treatment, the dog was in a deteriorated condition and had sublingual, foreleg and eye ulcers, one month later. A visceral leishmaniasis was suspected by the veterinarian. The dog was hospitalized awaiting results, which revealed the presence of L. infantum. However, the dog succumbed suddenly before the results were returned. Few imported and scarce autochthonous canine VL cases have been previously reported in French Guiana, raising the need for local epidemiological surveillance, considering the possibility of unusual transmission routes of the parasite.
