In the medical imaging department of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Colmar, Doctor Michel
Schmitt, chief physician of the medical imaging department, is currently analyzing the whole
scanner photos taken in the establishment since the beginning of November.
An analysis that provides a lot of information on the spread of the coronavirus in
our region.
A first case from November 16
For the past few days, Doctor Schmitt has been carrying out a retrospective study on 2,456 scanners
thoracic tests performed between November 1 and April 30. All the pictures are analyzed, all
combined reasons: cardiac, pulmonary, traumatic, tumor pathologies. The
selected “COVID compatible” or “typical COVID” files were reviewed in second
then at third reading by two other experienced radiologists.
A track for a better understanding of the epidemiological curve
The results of the study were analyzed and plotted on graphs. The curve
epidemiological that is emerging is significant and indicates the following results:
- First cases noted in our center on 11/16
- Very slow progression in the incidence of pathology until the end of February
- Then rapid increase in incidence with a peak on 3/31/2020
The decay needs further study.
A collaboration is launched with the CNRS to start an epidemiological exploitation
results.
For Dr. Schmitt, some cases were therefore already in circulation in the region at the beginning
of November. The virus then dispersed very sporadically. Contagion
accelerated during the end of year events: Christmas markets, family celebrations,
until the epidemic explodes after a religious rally in Mulhouse, the last
week of February.
The reasons for the study
Several health professionals have noted this winter atypical health accidents
in adults or children, quickly qualified as flu: temperature and cough developing
longer than usual (2 to 3 weeks), loss of voice (aphonia), taste or
smell, unusual state of persistent fatigue, weight loss ...
At that time, if an epidemic with respiratory translation was known in China, nothing evoked
such a pathology elsewhere in the world and the signs, both clinical and para-clinical
(whose imaging results) were not yet known.
The epidemic wave then arrived: the first cases diagnosed with COVID were in
Colmar on February 25 and a first death was recorded on March 4. Then came the
wave of submersion, from which the department begins to emerge thanks to containment and
social distancing measures; also thanks to the natural evolution of a viral epidemic.
The care of COVID patients in the Pole du Diaconat Center Alsace
The establishments of the Private Health Center of the Diaconat Center Alsace are organized to
manage patients with COVID19.
- Albert Schweitzer Hospital,
- The Diaconat Colmar clinic and reception center,
have more than 80 dedicated beds. Patients are admitted in particular, in transfer of
Colmar Civil Hospitals. The establishments treated nearly 300 patients
COVID19.
Of course, the establishment is considering many avenues to pursue this
study. On the one hand, it can be deepened thanks to biological data or
still hospitalization reports, and on the other hand be extended to other centers
imagery.
