The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services developed a free, 12-page booklet to help Missourians prepare for a possible influenza pandemic, the department announced this morning.

The booklet was designed to help readers learn more about pandemic flu, plan for when a pandemic strikes, and protect against getting and spreading the flu virus.

?Preparing for Pandemic Flu: A Community Guide? has tips for creating family response plans, and lists of emergency supplies such as food and water if a pandemic forced people to temporarily remain home.

?When the next flu pandemic strikes, everyone including individuals, families and entire communities will have to work together to get through it and minimize its impact on our lives,? DHSS Director Jane Drummond said in a written statement.

?If Missourians will do all we can now to plan and prepare for how we will respond to a pandemic, we all will have a much better chance of success,? the statement said.

Copies of the guide can be obtained at www.dhss.mo.gov by clicking on Ready in 3 and Pandemic Influenza, or by contacting the department at 573-751-6062. The publication is in English, but will soon be available in Spanish, Bosnian and Braille.
