F&M College: 76 Students Report Flu-like Symptoms

Earlier this month, CBS-21 News reported two confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus on the campus of Gettysburg College. Now, Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster is confirming the virus has touched down on its campus.
So far, 76 Franklin and Marshall students have reported flu-like symptoms. A school spokesperson says at least some of those cases are confirmed to be H1N1, but an official number is not known.
?The fact that this flu is showing up now, rather than the normal time for the seasonal flu, tells us it?s probably the H1N1 virus,? says Nancy Collins, F&M?s Vice President for College Communications.
Most of the students have not been specifically tested for swine flu, at the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control.
Franklin and Marshall College is hoping to kick the illness by encouraging good hygiene.
?(We?re) just telling people again and again to wash their hands and if they can?t, to just use hand sanitizer,? explains Collins.
Because of Swine Flu concerns, the school has installed 150 sanitizer dispensers around campus.
Students who have already come down with the flu are urged to stay in their dorm rooms or head home to their parent?s house. Sophomore student Walter Stewart is a House Staff member and says his crew has been warned on how to handle sick students on the floor.
?We were told about precautions to take incase it happens. Appel (infirmary) has little kits with masks and gloves if someone stays in their room and has to be brought food,? says Stewart.
Stewart, who says he?s Pre-Med., thinks the H1N1 scare is being blown out of proportion.
?It?s not as bad as many people think it is as compared to the regular flu.?
F&M says, as of now, the number of students reporting flu-like symptoms has calmed, but they understand it could always worsen. The school has a plan in place should they need it.
Also in Lancaster County, a spokesperson for Millersville University says the school has had 5 confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus. During flu season, Health Services sees about 50 people a day. Right now, they?re seeing as many as 80 students a day.
