The Occitanie Regional Health Agency (ARS) has confirmed several cases of tuberculosis in two educational institutions in Nîmes: the high school and the Alzon Higher Institute. These unrelated cases have led to the implementation of a large-scale preventive screening program, coordinated by the Tuberculosis Control Center (Clat) at the Nîmes University Hospital.
The first case was diagnosed in June 2025 in a university student. Three other cases were subsequently detected, including two contagious forms. At the end of September, a new case was identified in a high school student, this time unrelated to the first. The origin is believed to be "imported," following travel to areas where the disease remains endemic.
"The disease never went away."
To prevent any spread, more than 1,000 people (students, teachers, and staff) will be screened directly within the schools in the coming days. X-rays and blood tests will be offered. " The schools have implemented all necessary measures ," assures the ARS, while the Alzon management praises " the great efficiency of the CHU ."
For Dr. Myriam Chiaruzzi, from the Clat at Nîmes University Hospital, these cases are a reminder that tuberculosis, " far from being eradicated, is still circulating . " The disease, transmitted through the air when an infected person coughs, " requires prolonged contact to be contagious ." Symptoms can go unnoticed: persistent cough, fatigue, loss of appetite, or night sweats. Despite its worrying reputation, tuberculosis remains well under control today. " People very rarely die from it in France, provided it is diagnosed early and properly treated ," the doctor emphasizes.
