Libourne: a case of tuberculosis in a nursery school teacher

A meeting will be held at the Garderose nursery school in Libourne on Tuesday to organize the screening of children likely to have been contaminated by the school teacher.

The BCG vaccine, which protects children against tuberculosis , has no longer been compulsory for admission to a community since 2007. And the disease, which is characterized by a serious infection of the lungs, reappears sporadically in France. In Libourne, in Gironde, a nursery school teacher was diagnosed as carrying this disease. Parents learned of this by receiving an information letter from the Gironde department on January 30. “To date, there is no longer any risk of contagiousness ,” the department specifies in its letter.

Some students from the Garderose school in Libourne who were in contact with this teacher could nevertheless have been infected by the Koch bacillus bacteria which is spread by air. In order to prevent the risk of contamination, they will be screened in accordance with the recommendations of the High Council of Public Health. An operation consisting in particular of carrying out a chest x-ray but which “must not be carried out urgently to be effective” .

Worrying symptoms

Screening is coordinated by the Bordeaux anti-tuberculosis center. An information meeting for parents is organized at the Garderose nursery school in Libourne, Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The prescriptions necessary for medical examinations will be distributed on this occasion.

In the meantime, parents are urged to be particularly vigilant for symptoms that could indicate tuberculosis infection in their children. Unusual cough, night sweats, unexplained fatigue and weight loss should lead them to consult their doctor immediately.

A case of tuberculosis detected in a high school in Lyon

The rectorate assures that "the situation is under control" and considers the risk of contamination to other students to be low.

An information meeting is planned with the parents of students at Branly High School, as the student who contracted tuberculosis in September has now been cured.

The case of contamination dates back to the end of September. An information meeting will be organized next week at the high school on Quai Édouard Branly, in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon , where a student contracted tuberculosis , according to information from Le Progrès confirmed to Le Figaro . Parents of students were notified by email on Tuesday of the implementation of a precautionary protocol, the details of which will be specified.

The rectorate assures that "the situation is under control" and considers the risk of contamination to other students to be low. It justifies the delay in sending information to parents by the long incubation period of tuberculosis, from one to three months. Once this period has passed, tests can now be carried out on certain students. The sick high school student was able to be treated. He even resumed classes.

A few hundred cases per year in the region

"Tuberculosis treatment combines several antibiotics over a prolonged period, usually 6 months ," says the ARS Auvergne Rhône-Alpes website. About 10% of people infected with tuberculosis develop the disease. The infection is not contagious, only the disease is. It is characterized by a persistent cough, prolonged fever, night sweats, blood in the sputum and weight loss.

A disease that must be reported due to its high contagiousness, tuberculosis can take serious forms in immunocompromised children. The BCG vaccine can protect against these serious forms, but vaccination coverage has declined since 2007, when it has no longer been mandatory. This disease remains rare, with 4,217 cases reported in France, including 463 in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
