spontaneous severe cases admitted outside the surveillance network ..

| Figure 6 | Evolution of the weekly number of severe hospitalized

Sentinel network data representing severe cases hospitalized in intensive care, are
discussed in more detail (Table 1).
They show that the age group 15-64 years is the most affected. The majority of cases have a risk factor
, stressing the importance of vaccination in these fragile populations. However,
42% of cases are without serious risk factor. The lethality is around 2%.
The majority of cases (n = 29) was infected by a virus A (H1N1) V. Among the other confirmed cases,
were found 1 virus A (H3N2), 5 influenza A not subtyped, 1 influenza B virus and 7
during typing. Only 2 cases were not confirmed virologically ..
Surveillance of serious cases will be extended from week 01/2011 to all services of

Influenza: worrying increase in the patients in intensive care

Contrary to last winter, influenza arrived quietly. But also more late than envisaged. Calamitous is vaccination drive of 2009-2010 at issue? Had it a boomerang effect? The fact that they were not perhaps wary enough. Result, the epidemic, which is in full progress, has already drawn away 7 deceases in France of which that, on the eve of Christmas, of Varois hospitalized in intensive care in Marseilles. This patient, who introduced no particular risk factor, would have introduced the first symptoms upon the return to trip in London. It was taken in some days. Two other patients are in intensive care nowadays in Marseilles of which a person of about fifty having years, her, a contour at risk. " This patient introduces a very serious form which requires an extrabodily oxygenation ", points out the Pr Claude Martin, leader of the intensive care of the North hospital.
433 000 persons were touched in two weeks, according to network Sentries Inserm and according to newsletter published yesterday by the national Institute of health wakefulness (InVS), on the whole country, 72 serious cases, among which 32 concerning of the patients without factor of risks, were signalled since the beginning of the epidemic.

Also worrying, the number of patients accepted in intensive care is in increase. They enumerate quarantine this day on all the French hospitals. The two thirds of the sick introducing a serious form were infected by the virus H1N1, " but there are also strict cases of influenza B eta / H3N2 (the present virus of influenza before the appearance of H1N1, Editor's notes), as it is specified in the national centre of south reference. " The virus of influenza HAS / H1N1 is not less serious as that of last year ", adds the doctor virologist of the centre aimed by Pr Lina. The poor campaign of communication of last winter had the effect " a calamitous vaccinal coverage ", deplores the Pr Martin. InVS also notes a doubling, for three weeks, among hospitalizations and among new cases put together in groups for the old persons.

The regional Groups of observation of influenza (Hot toddy) make the same observations and consultations at the general practitioners begin being bottled. A new appeal to vaccination was made, especially for the obese persons, immunod?prim?es, asthmatic, very displayed. " It is not too much late, assures the Pr Philippe Brouqui, leader of the service of infectious diseases the North hospital of Marseilles. Vaccine is efficient ten in fourteen days after injection. The epidemic is going to continue till the end of February. " In hospitals of Marseilles, the implement of prevention - careful washing of hands, harbour of the mask, instigation to vaccination to avoid influenza nosocomiales - was rekindled. An emergency committee was set up. It will meet every week. Influenza HAS / H1N1 draws away 260 deceases last winter in France.
