"We inform you that several cases of scarlet fever have been reported to us by families, at all levels." The principal of the Bouilly college sent an email to parents on Friday, February 7, informing them that this infectious disease had appeared in the establishment. "There is no need to be overly concerned, but we must remain vigilant," continued the director.
"This pathology gives rise to school exclusion from the symptoms until the 2nd day of the start of antibiotic therapy ," writes the principal, hoping that the arrival of the winter holidays will put an end to this possible epidemic.
Less than ten cases have been reported at the college, and the information has been communicated to the Regional Health Agency (ARS), confirms the mayor, Benoît Groux, who has also been notified.
Its name may sound scary, because scarlet fever was a deadly childhood disease for a long time. It almost disappeared in Europe in the 1940s, but it is still circulating and has even seen a resurgence in some countries in recent years.
In Troyes, SOS Médecins confirms that scarlet fever diagnoses are not rare. Seventeen cases were recorded by the healthcare team in January 2025.
But this infectious childhood disease, caused by group A streptococcus, is now benign in the majority of cases. It results in fever, tonsillitis and a rash (small red spots appear on the body one to two days after the onset of the sore throat).
A consultation is necessary
The tongue takes on a particular appearance. It is first covered with a thick white coating and then becomes raw, with a raspberry red color after a few days. It is rare in children under 2 years old and adults. The disease mainly affects 5-10 year olds and is transmitted through the air. Treatment is based on antibiotics.
While mild forms of scarlet fever are common (moderate fever, few rashes), it can be accompanied by complications if left untreated. Hence the need to consult a doctor quickly in the event of symptoms.
